history
Although the event claims to be World Championships, the first Mountain Running World Championships in 1985 featured only European runners. That changed the next year when four runners from Morocco and one from Algeria took part. From 1985 to 1992 there was also a short-distance competition for men, in which the Austrian musician, cabaret artist and painter Alf Poier took part in 1988 .
The countries of the Eastern Bloc stayed away from the mountain running world championships, with the exception of Hungary , which sent a runner to the world championships on September 16, 1989. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, athletes from the Soviet Union , the GDR , Czechoslovakia , Poland and Bulgaria competed for the first time at the World Championships on September 15, 1990 .
The junior women competition took place for the first time in 1992. After that there was a four-year hiatus until it took place for the second time in 1997 and has been an integral part of the World Championships ever since.
Until 2008, the runners from England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland competed separately. Together they have formed the United Kingdom team since 2009 .
