Lenzerheide / Lai (German Lenzerheide , Rhaeto-Romanic Lai ) is a place in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland at about 1450-1600 m above sea level. M. Politically, the village is a fraction of the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz . Despite the German-sounding name, is the Lenzerheide in Romance language area. The section of main road 3 leading from Chur to Tiefencastel is often referred to as “Lenzerheide” or “Lenzerheidepass” for short , with the culmination between the neighboring towns of Valbella and Parpan .
history
The village of Lenzerheide did not emerge until the second half of the 19th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries ore was mined at the Parpaner Rothorn. Until the late 19th century, the Lenzerheide was previously a spring pasture of Obervazer farmers. The Obervazer Heide market took place in June. A modest tavern already existed in 1799. In 1854 Toni Lenz built the first stone house, in which the tavern on the market square and the post office were located. The Lenz family was the first Obervaz family to live in Maiensässweiler Lai all year round. In Canols near Heidsee, the Moser knacker's family lived in a wooden hut provided by the community. In the 1890s, a possible offspring of this family named Ziegler was still running this business a little east of today's Heidsee .
In the 1860s, Dr. Luzius and Maria Ursula Brügger-Jochberg used Lenzerheide as their summer residence. In 1874 some farmers in the hamlet of Lai opened an alpine dairy. When she built the Waldhof in 1875, Anna Maria Candrian undertook "arrangements for accepting Kuranten". Friedrich Nietzsche lived in this house in June 1887 and wrote the fragment "European Nihilism". Joachim Cantieni-Parpan opened the Hotel Kurhaus with 30 beds on June 24, 1882. In 1888 Johann Fidel Rischasch-Bläsi built the Hotel Post, which later became the Lenzerhorn . With the construction of the first Catholic church in 1886, the last step towards a new village community took place. In the years that followed, Chur families built their summer villas in Lai and Canols, and some farming families from the traditional groups of Vaz / Obervaz decided in the following decades to live in their Mayens all year round. The spa operation was initially limited to the summer. Winter operation, initially in unheated rooms, began in the 1890s.
In the years 1911 to 1939 the expansion of the above-mentioned and the construction of further hotels as well as residential and holiday homes began. In 1936 the first “Funibahn” from Val Sporz to Tgantieni was opened. In 1942, the first ski lifts really boosted the town as a tourist station with summer and winter operation. The Second World War led to a severe collapse in the hotel industry and the development of the place. The boom in holiday home and second home construction began around 1950 and has continued unabated today.
geography
In addition to the Lai village center, the Lenzerheide district includes the following districts (clockwise, starting in the east of the village center): Dieschen, Crapera, Sundroina, Clavadoiras, Resgia, Penasch, Clois, Sporz Davains, Val Sporz, Tgantieni, Fadail, Spoina, La Riva .
economy
The main industries are winter and summer tourism, construction and agriculture . In summer, the area is preferred for family holidays and fun sports . Attractions in summer are in particular the Heidsee (swimming, surfing, fishing), the specially marked mountain bike routes up to an altitude of 2000 m and golf on an 18-hole course.
In 2007 Lenzerheide recorded over 1.1 million overnight stays in hotels and parahoteleries. Rothornbahn and Scalottas chairlift bring holiday guests right into the middle of the hiking regions. The mountain tour from Parpaner Rothorn via Urdensee or Älplisee to Arosa (approx. 6 hours) and from there to Davos is called the "Mittelbünden Panoramaweg". Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG, which emerged from the merger of several mountain railway companies, is now one of the largest mountain railway companies in Central Grisons. The transport offer includes thirteen different systems on both sides of the valley with a capacity of over 8,000 people per hour for snowboarders and skiers . The Arosa - Lenzerheide ski area connection was initially rejected in June 2008. After a fundamental revision of the project, however, the sovereign gave the municipality of Vaz / Obevaz the green light at the end of November 2011. The connection was opened in mid-January 2014.
The World Cup slopes approved by the FIS allow races in all alpine disciplines for women and men. This is why Lenzerheide is a popular venue for the World Cup finals (2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014). The total length of the slopes of all levels of difficulty in the entire Arosa Lenzerheide area is around 225 km. There is also a large natural ice rink , a public indoor swimming pool and 56 km of cross-country trails . On April 26, 2013 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new Biathlon Arena Lenzerheide , which serves both as a training center for biathletes and cross-country skiers and as a venue for international competitions. The Tour de Ski was held there in January 2016 and in the long term one wants to apply for the hosting of biathlon world cups and biathlon world championships . Lenzerheide has been one of the venues for the European Snowboard Cup since 2012 .
Lenzerheide is the transit point and (since 2013) the starting point of the Swiss Irontrail mountain run .
