The Heidsee ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the Idiom Surmiran : Igl Lai ; in the local dialect: Il Lai ) lies between the villages of Valbella and Lenzerheide in the area of the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It is 1484  m above sea level. It consists of a larger northern and a smaller southern part, which are separated from each other by a dam. Both lakes are private waters. They are administered and managed by the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz.

history

Heidsee as Vatzersee before the damming

The northern, older part of the lake was created when, after the last Ice Age, the water collected between moraines and landslide masses. The lake was first mentioned in 1484, when the Chur bishop Ortlieb von Brandis had a fish pond built in its northern part.

In 1881 the diocese sold the lake to the "Haidsee Consortium Brügger & Meier" for 12,000 francs. The driving force in this consortium were the Churwalden hoteliers Johann Brügger-Battaglia and his son Georg Brügger-Vieli. They enlarged the lake and built a "fisherman's hut" on an island, the so-called island chalet. Here guests could eat and sleep. With this, Johann and Georg Brügger laid the foundation stone for tourism in the Maiensässweiler Canols (today Valbella) and created the “scenic jewel” of the high valley with the damming of the lake.

In 1914, a concession agreement was signed between the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz and the electricity company of the city of Zurich , according to which the EWZ could use the gradient of the Heidbach flowing south to the Albula and develop the Heidsee as an accumulation basin. In 1916, the city of Zurich was also allowed to build a reservoir in the south of the Heidsee. The basin measures around 350 by 180 meters and is separated from the northern part of the lake by a dam. Before the damming , the lake was called Vatzersee .

The Heidseewerk was built from 1917 to 1919 and led to massive changes to the landscape in the area of the lake. By raising the already built dam, the lake level was raised by 1.70 meters. For the newly built part of the lake, a new dam was built in the south.

Old post office building

The Lenzerheidsee post office was on an island to which a causeway led. When the lake level was raised, C. Bettinaglio rebuilt the chalet on the south-western edge. Initially it was run as Pension La Riva, later as a restaurant, then as a Bergwald children's home and finally as a Bergwald departure center for rejected asylum seekers.

Heidsee today

In 1974, when the concession was renewed, the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz waived the income associated with the emptying of the lakes in the months of November to March for the purpose of generating storage energy for reasons of landscape and tourism. The western part of the lake in particular has been upgraded through renaturation and nature conservation measures. The marsh gentian growing here is considered a botanical rarity . In the south-western part of the lake there is a freely accessible bath. Cloakrooms as well as various entertainment and play options are available. Entry is free.

In Heidsee numerous fish species such as live char , brown trout , rainbow trout , minnows , carp and tench . It is allowed to fish. The fishing season runs from June 1st to October 15th. Both lakes are stocked with char and trout each season.
