The Urdensee is a mountain lake above Tschiertschen in Switzerland .

Location and description

The Urdensee is located at 2249  m in a side valley of the central Schanfigg between the communities Arosa and Vaz / Obervaz in the Urder Augstberg alpine area , framed by Plattenhorn , Hörnli , Hörnligrat , Tschirpen , Parpaner Weisshorn and Parpaner Schwarzhorn . The shore of the lake is surrounded on all sides by alpine meadows, so that no swamp vegetation could form. The cold lake water resting on slate rocks and black-green serpentine is extremely clear and shimmers turquoise blue in the sunshine. Similar to the Älplisee, the lake was created by damming at the natural bar of a lateral moraine . In the western part it has a striking shoal of unknown dimensions. The ice cover is up to eight months a year. The Urden area was first mentioned in 1451 as the "Alp Urdan" estate. In 1564 it was already called "Urdenalp". The term is probably derived from the Rhaeto-Romanic "uorden" (order).

Tourist use

The new aerial tramway over the Urdental. It connects the ski areas of Lenzerheide and Arosa .

The Urder Augstberg is still today an alpine area of the Schanfigger villages Calfreisen , Castiel and Lüen . Mountain hiking trails lead from Tschiertschen, the Hörnlihütte and from Urdenfürggli to the lake. Because of the nearby Hörnli Express , it receives the most visitors from hikers and mountain bikers from Arosa. In winter the area is reserved for the variant drivers.

The originally planned development of Urder Augstberg with two chairlifts as part of the Arosa - Lenzerheide ski area connection had to be abandoned due to resistance from nature conservation groups. The Urdental is now crossed directly from the Hörnligrat to Urdenfürggli with the supportless Urdenbahn . The connection was opened on January 18, 2014. There is total plant protection in the entire Urden area .

The legend of Lake Urden

The legendary area of Urdensee with Hörnli, Hörnligrat, Tschirpen and Parpaner Weisshorn (from left)

Similar to the areas around the Schwellisee , Schwarzsee and Hauensee , the Urdensee is traditionally shrouded in legend. In earlier times, the Arosa Walser gave him strange qualities. They thought it was unfathomable and said that its water swirled and formed a funnel hole, and that it shouted "when the weather changes". The tradition of clear traces led a wagon road over the lake. The rich lords of Plurs had brought their ore, which they mined nearby, to the iron smelter in the Arosa Isel via this road . The stone desert by the lake was once a blooming alp. The herdsman on the Urder Augstberg, however, handed the passing hikers poisoned milk and then robbed them. Finally, the greedy man also killed his own mother in order to get her inheritance. Then the alp was suddenly swallowed with a roar, including the herdsmen and cows, and covered by the newly created Urden Lake. The dairy farmer continues his ghostly mischief at the lake to this day and was often seen by alpine servants accompanied by a red cooler. This is the reason why the boulder marking the upper end of the steep slope towards Inner Urden is called ghost stone today and the slope itself is called ghost slope.

The legend exists in various, sometimes quite different, variations. It served the string orchestra “Orchestrina Chur” as inspiration for a “ Fantasia for vibraphone and string orchestra” performed in Arosa, Chur and Scuol in February 2017 .
