The Tschirpen ( 2728  m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Plessur Alps in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . It is located in the area of the municipality of Arosa on the border with Tschiertschen-Praden .

Location and description

The Tschirpen is part of the Central Plessurberge between the Hörnligrat and the Parpaner Weisshorn . Together with this it forms a long ridge at the southern end of the Urder Augstberg. Its southeast ridge slopes down towards Schafälpli or Schaftällihorn and at its end forms the natural bar of the Älplisees . The north ridge, which is accessible via a via ferrata , merges seamlessly into the Hörnligrat. The northeast flank drops steeply towards the Hidden Weng above Hauensee and Schwellisee . There is a rock tower in front of the eastern demolition, which can be climbed from the gap between the tower and the wall over an approximately ten meter high ledge. The view from the summit is limited, but offers an interesting view of the Urdensee and the Arosa Valley. The name Tschirpen is probably derived from "Scherben" (mountain rubble).

Geology and mining

The Tschirpen is the namesake of the Tschirpen blanket, an eastern Alpine deposit area from the Mesozoic era , which is largely located under the Arosa Dolomites blanket and the Silvretta blanket. The Weisshorn - Plattenhorn chain, part of the Arosa shed zone , dips beneath the Tschirpen from the northeast.

From July 23 to August 31, 2016, on the east side of the Tschirpen, the walk-in Land Art installation “Grenzland” will draw attention to the meeting of European and originally African rock masses. This is done with 49 markings made of reflective solar material, moving objects that are mounted on three meter long rods.

As on the Aroser and Parpaner Rothorn as well as on the Erzhorn and Guggernellgrat , iron ore was mined on the Tschirpen in earlier times and smelted in the smelting furnace in the Isel . The tunnels, in which mainly hematite was extracted, were located in the Hidden Weng at around 2360  m above sea level. M.
