The Parpaner Weisshorn ( 2824  m ) is a mountain in the Plessuralpen in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

The west-east running, rocky summit ridge lies between the communities Tschiertschen-Praden in the north and Arosa in the south. The ridge, which offers an interesting deep view of the Urdensee , merges into the Tschirpen at its eastern end and from there into the Hörnligrat . At 2,776  meters high west summit also has Vaz / Obervaz share.

The north ridge going out from there falls to Urdenfürggli , the corresponding south ridge to Gredigs Fürggli . The foot of the Parpaner Weisshorn is accessible from these crossings as well as from the Älplisee through mountain hiking trails ( grade T2 ). Other neighboring peaks are the Älplihorn , the Parpaner Rothorn and the Parpaner Schwarzhorn . Geologically, the Parpaner Weisshorn belongs to the Tschirpen Nappe, which is very similar to the neighboring Arosa Dolomites Nappe.

Rock fall 2016

The rock fall on the north flank, situation on December 3, 2016

At the end of November 2016, a major rock fall occurred on the northern flank of the Parpaner Rothorn , in which between 5,000 and 10,000 cubic meters of rock material and snow fell in the direction of Urdental.

The first small breaks took place on November 28, 2016. The actual rock fall probably occurred in an event on November 29 between 10:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. Urdenbahn employees observed the process and reported it to the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, which immediately informed the Graubünden Office for Forests and Natural Hazards.

The termination point is in the permafrost area . The immediate cause of the rock fall is unclear; the regular thaw and frost cycle probably plays a role. In the months and years that followed, other smaller landslides occurred at the same location.
