The Hörnligrat is a pronounced mountain ridge and pass crossing between the Hörnli and the Tschirpen in the Plessur Alps in the canton of Graubünden , Switzerland . The two mountain hiking trails that cross it connect Arosa with Tschiertschen and - via Urdenfürggli - with Vaz / Obervaz and Parpan .

description

The Hörnligrat is located on the border between the communities of Arosa and Tschiertschen . At its highest point at 2,511  m which is Hörnlihütte of Ski-Club Arosa . Between this and the Hörnli runs on 2,440  m of historic transition at the Hörnli saddle - now a mountain trail - to Urdensee and continue further to Tschiertschen or via Urdenfürggli to Lenzerheide . The top stations of the Hörnli Express and the Hörnli chairlift are located south of the hut on the ridge that has been removed , where the second path crossing, which is mainly used today, runs. This point on the ridge, which is around 2501  m high, has been incorrectly referred to by locals as "Hörnli" since it was mechanically developed, which is related to the name given to the cable car stations. The signpost there is labeled "Hörnlihütte" and the altitude of 2511  m, which is incorrect for its location .

history

The history of the Hörnligrat as a pass crossing is closely linked to that of the Urdenfügli. The Hörnligrat – Urdenfürggli route was for a long time the fastest and most important connection to the Rhaeto-Romanic Obervaz for the Walsers who had settled in Arosa since the beginning of the 14th century , to which they belonged in the church until their own church was built in Langwies in 1384/85 despite the language barrier .

Until recently, traces of an old path, which was probably manageable for narrow wheeled carts, could still be seen between Hörnligrat and Urdenfürggli. It is unclear whether the mining previously operated in Arosa was partly responsible for this above-average standard of construction compared to the Carmenna , the Furcletta and the Maienfelder Furgga .

Tourist use

In 1911, an approximately one meter wide bridle path from Arosa to Lenzerheide and to Parpan was created on the traces of the existing transition. In 1923 the Arosa Ski Club built the Hörnlihütte at the top of the ridge. In the course of this, this area of the ridge was also made accessible from both sides with hiking trails. In 1945 the terminus of the Hörnlilift followed south of it, which for the first time required large-scale earth moving. After the construction of the gondola lift and the new ski lift in 1962, a large amount of rock had to be removed again, but initially part of the ridge between the two stations remained.

Today, the entire section there, including the access to the hut, has been leveled, and the main crossing towards Urdenfürggli is actively used by mountain hikers, mountain bikers and ski tourers. All accesses to the Hörnligrat have a level of difficulty T2 . A continuation of the Schanfiggerstrasse from Arosa to Lenzerheide and a plan variant of the Arosabahn under the Hörnligrat were not implemented.

As part of the Arosa - Lenzerheide ski area connection , the Hörnligrat became the location of the eastern station of an approximately 1,700 meter long pillarless connecting cable car, the Urdenbahn , to Urdenfürggli. The lift opened on January 18, 2014. In the legendary and protected Urdental, no ski slopes or advanced lifts were built.

The Hörnligrat is the starting point for the via ferrata on the Tschirpen and a mountain bike downhill route to Innerarosa.

Sports event

The Hörnligrat has been a transit point for the Swiss Irontrail since 2014 .
