The Pass da Niemet ( ital . Passo di Emet ) lies at 2295 m between the Averstal and Val San Giacomo . The hiking trail over the pass connects the Swiss Innerferrera with the Italian Montespluga .

geography

The Niemet Pass is not far from the border between Switzerland and Italy at 2295 m . From the pass, the Niemettal, in which the Ual da Niemet flows, leads into the Averstal. In the south, the pass is dominated by the eponymous Pizzo d'Emet or Piz Timun ( 3212 m ).

The hike from Innerferrera over the Niemet Pass to Montespluga takes 5 ½ hours, with an ascent of around 900 meters. The Rifugio Giovanni Bertacchi ( 2175 m ) of the Italian Alpine Club is 20 minutes' walk after the border . A little further down is the Lago Emet 2145 m .

history

The Averstal established contacts with Italy via the Pass da Niemet. Among other things, cooperage work was carried out.

In 1204 Chiavenna was able to lease pasture areas on Alp Niemet / Emet from the freemen on Schamserberg ("homines liberos de Saxammo"), who were co-owners there. After a mobile path for single-axle carts was built between Campodolcino and Madesimo in 1226 , it was possible to get to Schams via the Niemet pass instead of the Splügen pass. In Madesimo you could choose between the Splügen and Niemet passes to continue the journey.

In Val San Giacomo there were many feuds over disputed alpine borders and uses. In 1428 a peace agreement was reached in Campodolcino between the Free von Schams and the people of Val San Giacomo.

Until after the Second World War , smuggling over the Niemet Pass played a certain role.
