The Kleine Scheidegg is the top of the pass ( 2061  m above sea level ) between the Eiger ( 3967  m above sea level ) and Lauberhorn ( 2472  m above sea level ) in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland , which connects Grindelwald with Lauterbrunnen . On the Kleine Scheidegg there are hotels , restaurants, ski lifts and the train station of the two rack railways Wengernalpbahn and Jungfraubahn .

The Wengernalpbahn runs from Lauterbrunnen and Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald; the Jungfrau Railway runs through the Eiger and Mönch up to the Jungfraujoch . The former was completed in 1893. Construction of the Jungfrau Railway began in the summer of 1896. In 1898 the section to the Eigergletscher station was put into operation; In 1912 the entire nine-kilometer stretch to the Jungfraujoch was put into operation. However, tourism had already developed before the construction of the railways: Since the end of the 18th century, travelers had been visiting the Bernese Oberland on Grand Tours and hiked across the Kleine Scheidegg. A first hotel for tourists was built in 1840. In the mid-1920s, the hotels were also open for the first time in winter. In 1941 the ski lift to the Lauberhorn was built.

"The Kleine Scheidegg is visited by innumerable crowds of tourists every year, and the already lively traffic has significantly increased the opening of the Jungfrau Railway."

- Geographical Lexicon of Switzerland (1906)

The Kleine Scheidegg is known for the impressive panorama with the three peaks Eiger, Mönch ( 4107  m above sea level ) and Jungfrau ( 4158  m above sea level ) and numerous glaciers. There is also a good view of the north face of the Eiger to follow mountaineers in the wall with binoculars.

In winter, the Kleine Scheidegg - together with the Männlichen - is the center of an extensive ski area around Grindelwald and Wengen. The start of the famous Lauberhorn race is on the Lauberhorn above Scheidegg .

Since 1993, the Kleine Scheidegg has been the destination of the Jungfrau Marathon every September , which starts in Interlaken . From 1998 to 2020, the Snowpenair was held on the Kleine Scheidegg at the end of the winter season with up to 10,000 spectators. An agreement regarding an objection to the construction of the V-Bahn provided for the festival no longer to take place.
