The Jungfrau Marathon is a marathon that has been held in the Bernese Oberland every year since 1993 at the beginning of September . It is one of the most famous mountain marathons in the world and is organized by the Jungfrau Marathon Association. This running competition is known for the landscape in which it takes place and for its 1829 meters of ascent.

History of the Jungfrau Marathon

After the Swiss Alpine Marathon was launched in 1986, the time was ripe for a marathon aiming at an Alpine summit. The Jungfrau Marathon was the first run of its kind in the Alps over 42.195 km, even if it only reached about half the height of the Jungfrau summit. More than 1500 runners reached the finish line at the premiere. First winner was Birgit Lennartz from Germany with a time of 3:30:00. In the men's race, the Swiss Jörg Hägler just missed a time under three hours with 3:00:05. In the later years, well-known runners such as Marco Kaminski , Franziska Rochat-Moser , Tesfaye Eticha , Jonathan Wyatt , Emebet Abossa and many more joined the winners' lists .

In 1998, the two American authors Dennis Craythorn and Rich Hanna awarded the Jungfrau Marathon the title “most beautiful marathon in the world” in their book The ultimate guide to international marathons . This also contributed to making the run so well known and coveted that many runners were not given a starting place, as the organizers limited the number of starting places to 3000 and later to 3500 in order to protect the environment.

For the 10th run in 2002, the run was therefore held on two days, so that 5260 runners could reach the finish. The following year, New Zealander Jonathan Wyatt broke the Ethiopian Tesfaye Eticha's old course record of 2:53:28 with the new best time of 2: 49: 01.6. In 2005 and 2006, Tesfaye Eticha was able to win the race again.

In 2007, the 4th Mountain Running World Championships on the long distance were held at this run , which Jonathan Wyatt won ahead of the two Italians Hermann Achmüller and Gerd Frick. In the women's category, the Norwegian Anita Håkenstad Evertsen was world champion ahead of the two Russians Jelena Kaledina and Schanna Malkowa; Anja Carlsohn from Germany was narrowly beaten fourth.
At the 20th Jungfrau Marathon from September 7th to 9th, 2012 (because of the anniversary, the marathon was held again on two days), the world championships were held here again. The American Stevie Kremer and the Austrian Markus Hohenwarter won the day and thus the world championship title in the long distance mountain run.

Routing

The start takes place in Interlaken ( 565  m above sea level ), and the run ends on the Kleine Scheidegg ( 2095  m above sea level ) in front of the triumvirate of the world-famous mountains of the Jungfrau massif: Eiger , Mönch and Jungfrau . There are 1829 meters up and 305 meters down to conquer. The highest point is reached at kilometer 41 at 2205 m above sea level.

Spectators in Wengen

After the start next to the Grandhotel Victoria-Jungfrau, the runners first take a short lap through Interlaken. The route, which is very flat up to kilometer 10, leads the runners via Bönigen to Wilderswil . Now the first 100 meters of altitude have to be overcome. The route runs through the villages of Gsteigwiler and Zweilütschinen . After flatter sections of the route, the last kilometers to Lauterbrunnen are steeper uphill at 20 kilometers.

Shortly after the half marathon mark, only about 300 meters in altitude have been overcome.

After a somewhat downward stretch of the route, the runners stand at kilometer 25 in front of the “wall”, the steep ascent to Wengen , where 500 meters of altitude have to be overcome; Wengen is reached after 31 kilometers. Another 600 meters in altitude have to be mastered up to Wengernalp . The runners get a view of the surrounding mountain landscape and when the weather is nice, the view of the mountains and glaciers of the Jungfrau massif is sufficient.

The last 400 meters are on a mountain path, over which the runners work their way up the ridge of the moraine of the Eiger glacier like a string of pearls until they reach the culmination point of the route at the Locherflue. Until 2010, the year he died, Roman Käslin played Scottish melodies to the runners on a bagpipe . Seppli Rast is continuing this tradition.

The last kilometer to the finish on the Kleine Scheidegg is downhill.

Supporting program

A supporting program will be organized as part of the Jungfrau Marathon.

From 2004 to 2017 the Jungfrau Mile was held, an invitation race for top runners and initially part of the Post Cup on a flat one- mile circuit (1609 m). Today the Friday races, a series of competitions over different distances and for different age groups, are held. In addition, there is a race for parasports , which was held for the tenth time in 2018.

Public transport

All participants can travel to the start by train within Switzerland ("from their place of residence") and - with their start number - also use the train to the Kleine Scheidegg station next to their destination.
