Swiss Alpine Marathon

The route of the Swiss Alpine Marathon is signposted all year round

The Swiss Alpine Marathon is a running event in Davos that has been held annually at the end of July since 1986. The main route is an ultramarathon (K78) of 78.5 km, as well as two marathons (K42, a mountain marathon , and C42), a three-quarter marathon (K30, 30.0 km), a half marathon (K21) and a quarter marathon (K10 , 10.5 km) in the program. The half marathon is also offered as a walking discipline (WALK, 21.1 km).

stretch

The ascent to the Kesch hut
  • The K78 first leads from Davos (1538 m above sea level) south along the eastern slope of the Landwasser Valley , via the hamlet of Spina above Glaris to Monstein . Soon afterwards it goes down into the valley to Schmelzboden and from there via the old road through the Zügen Gorge to the train station in Wiesen . Cross the Wiesen Viaduct towards Filisur , where the lowest point on the route is reached (km 32; 1019 m). From now on it goes steadily uphill, first along the Albula valley to Bergün (km 40; 1365 m), from there through the Val Tuors to the hamlet of Chants (km 47; 1822 m). Shortly after Chants, the paved path turns into mountain paths, and the steepest part of the route begins. The highest point of the route is reached at the Kesch hut (km 53) (2632 m). A panorama trail leads to the Scalettapass (km 60, 2606 m), where the race doctor takes a quick look at each runner to decide whether he needs help. On the next four kilometers to Dürrboden you lose 600 meters in altitude , then you go gently downhill on paved paths for the last 14 km to Davos. Carrying out the K78 on the panorama trail requires good weather conditions. If these are not met, an alternative variant is available via Sertigpass / -tal. To check and optimize the organization, the ready-to-run variant will be carried out once in 2011, regardless of the weather. The route for K78 and K42 runs from Keschhütte via Lai da Ravais-ch - Sur (Pt. 2580), Sertig Pass (the highest point at 2739 m above sea level), Sertig Dörfli, Clavadel (via hiking trail) to Davos.
  • The K42 starts in Bergün and is largely identical to the second half of the K78. Only the panorama trail behind the Keschhütte is reserved for ultra-marathon runners, so that marathon runners can go via Alp Funtauna (2192 m) to the Scalettapass.
  • Since 2003, the C42 has been offering a second marathon route that does not run in the high mountains. In the first few years, Davos started together with the K78 runners; the goal was in Bergün. 2006 and 2007 ran in the opposite direction with the start in Tiefencastel (851 m) uphill to Davos. First it passed the Church of St. Peter Mistail , then it went via Alvaneu and Schmitten GR , past the Landwasser Viaduct , to the Wiesen train station, where it merged with the K78 route. In 2008 the direction was changed again: the start is again in Davos, the route leads via Filisur to the school in Tiefencastel.
  • The K30 since 2008, the K78-route follows to the finish at the outskirts of Filisur; until 2010 the route was called K31 due to a slightly different route . The same route leading down the valley was run once before 2005 under the designation K30 . From 2005 to 2007 there was an opposite run from Filisur to Davos (K28). This route running up the valley had led to a considerable decrease in the number of participants.
  • The K21 has taken a completely new course since 2007. It starts in Klosters on the Sunniberg bridge and leads over Cavadürli, Bahnhofplatz Klosters, Laret, the Wolfgang Pass and Lake Davos to Davos. The walking discipline WALK leads over the same route.
  • The quarter marathon ( K10 ) starts in Laret and leads on the final stretch of the K21 to Davos.

Length and altitude of the routes

  • K78: 78.5 km +/- 2260 m (final version: 79.1 km +/- 2370 m)
  • K42: 42.2 km + 1890 m / - 1710 m (final version: 42.2 km + 1810 m / - 1630 m)
  • C42: 42.2 km + 450 m / - 1070 m (2006/07: + 1200 m / - 590 m)
  • K30: 30.0 km + 320 m / - 820 m
  • K21: 21.1 km + 750 m / - 260 m
  • K10: 10.5 km + 150 m / - 130 m
  • WALK: 21.1 km + 750 m / - 260 m

history

The run was launched in 1986 by Andrea Tuffli, who is still the event manager today. Although there were high alpine mountain races such as Sierre - Zinal in Switzerland before , a run that went over the marathon distance or beyond in such a terrain was a novelty in Europe at that time and accordingly attracted attention. The Swissalpine quickly established itself as the second major ultramarathon in Switzerland, alongside the 100 km from Biel .

In 1998 the biggest change to date was made to the running route. Instead of over the Sertigpass (2739 m above sea level) and Sertig , as before, the route from Bergün to Davos was now chosen via the Keschhütte and the Scalettapass. This made the route more than eleven kilometers longer, but also made some extreme downhill sections easier. In addition to the K42 from Bergün to Davos, which has been running on today's course since 1999, a second marathon route was added to the program in 2003 with the C42 from Davos to Bergün. In 2005 the direction of the C42 was reversed, so that the start was in Bergün, in 2006 the start of this run was moved to Tiefencastel.

Until 2004 the K30 was the shortest route. It was replaced by the K21 and the K28 in 2005.

The year 2011 brings the K78 and K42 a unique recourse to the original route over the Sertig Pass. This version is intended as a bad weather variant. The ascent of the K78 and K42 continues as before to the Kesch hut. From there the route leads to the Sertig Pass, steeply down to the Sertig Dörfli and via Clavadel to Davos.
