Biel running days

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bieler Lauftage (fr. Courses de Bienne ), which take place in Biel / Bienne in June , consist of various people and street runs . The most famous is the 100 km run, which has been held since 1959 and is considered the largest of its kind in the world. The route can be completed either alone, as a couple or in a 5-person relay. In addition, an ultra marathon (56 km), a half marathon and children's runs are part of the competition program. Leisure runners and walkers are offered a non-valued route of 13.5 km.

The Swiss ultramarathon championships have been integrated into the 100 km run since 2008 .

history

A 100 km run has been held at the Biel Running Days since 1959.

In 2020, the 100 km run of the Biel Running Days was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland . The two 100 km ultra running classics "Bieler Lauftage" in Switzerland and the " Taubertal 100 " in Germany agreed on a cooperation in 2020 and plan to hold the Biel-Taubertal Challenge annually in the future .

route

Until 2010, the start of all runs was at the Biel ice rink , which in 2011 was relocated to the center of the city at the Kongresshaus, where the finish line of the 100 km run is located. The 100 km run, at which 485 meters of altitude has to be mastered, starts on Friday evening at 10:00 p.m., the half marathon half an hour later. The route leads first through the center of Biel, then through Nidau , Port , Bellmund , Jens and Kappelen to Aarberg , whose medieval center is a highlight. This is also the goal of the half marathon. It continues to Lyss . From there on, the runners can use the help of a bicycle guide. Via Grossaffoltern and Scheunenberg it goes into the valley of the Limpach , which you follow via Balm bei Messen to Oberramsern , where you reach km 39.

The runners now turn south and reach Jegenstorf via Mülchi and Etzelkofen . Shortly afterwards you pass the 50 km mark and via Kernenried you get to Kirchberg , where the goal of the ultra marathon over 56 km is. Now the 100 km runners have to part with their bike guides for the next 10 km, because this is where the bumpiest section of the route on the Emme embankment begins , which is also jokingly called the “ Ho Chi Minh Path ”. When the faster runners are out here, it's still dark, which is why the vast majority of them use a headlamp.

Shortly before Gerlafingen the narrow path comes to an end, and the bike guides can join the runners again. Via Biberist , Lüterkofen-Ichertswil and Bibern it goes to Arch , where the Aare is reached, which you now follow for about 10 km to behind Büren . The last kilometers are back to Biel via Brügg and Safnern , where the runners are expected by large crowds at the finish.

The finish line closes on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., i.e. 21 hours after the start. For runners who do not reach the finish, there are partial route ratings in Oberramsern, Kirchberg and Bibern.
