Eva-Maria Westphal (born January 14, 1918 ; † 1996 ) was a German marathon and ultramarathon runner . She is considered a pioneer in long-distance running and was the first woman to hold the German record in the 100 km run from 1970 to 1974 .

The dental assistant from Hamburg , not necessarily blessed with a runner figure, won the 100 km of Biel in 1969 and 1971 , one of the largest ultramarathons in the world , at the age of over fifty . There she set the first German record over 100 km on June 14, 1969 in 12:24:00 h . At the 100 km run in Unna she won four times in a row from 1969 to 1972 and when she won on September 5, 1971, she beat her own German record in a personal best with a time of 10:11:51 h . This record was improved on September 11, 1974 by Christel Vollmerhausen in Unna to 10:09:17 h . Westphal competed in her favorite discipline, the 100 km run, between the ages of 48 and 70, a total of 21 times in Biel , Switzerland , 15 times in Unna, 7 times in Hamm and once in Hartola, Finland .

In 1972 Westphal came second in 3:52:30 h in the Black Forest Marathon , the first ever to be advertised for women and at the time the largest marathon in the world, after missing out on the overall victory of 71 participants last year just a few seconds behind Elfriede Rapp. She won the 1973 Wolfsburg Marathon with a time of 3:55:17 h . Eva-Maria Westphal was the oldest starter at the age of 54 (13th place, 3:47:34 hrs ) in the first international marathon in Waldniel, organized by Ernst van Aaken as the unofficial world championship , and also in the second event in 1974, the was accompanied by the ZDF sports report. In 1974 Westphal also won the Sensenstein Marathon near Nieste in March in 4:00:10 h , finished third in the Wolfsburg Marathon in 3:24:54 h in May and in October became the first woman ever to win the Athens Marathon with one time from 3:55:56 h .
