Hartola ( Swedish : Gustav Adolfs ) is a municipality in southern Finland . It is located around 80 km northeast of the city of Lahti in the middle of the Finnish lake district .

history

Hartola was first mentioned in a document in 1398 and belonged to the parish of Sysmä until it was communally independent in 1784 . The newly created community was by royal decree Gustav III. named after the Swedish heir to the throne Gustav Adolf . The namesake is said to have visited the community after his accession to the throne at the beginning of the 19th century. Since 1987, Hartola has officially called itself, if rather jokingly, "Kingdom" (Finnish kuningaskunta ). The wealth of the aristocratic landowners - especially the Tanderfelt family - is still witnessed today by several magnificent manors, especially the Koskipää estate, which has been converted into a museum .

The main branch of the economy today is the woodworking industry, which mainly manufactures house components, important employers are still the community itself and the trade.

coat of arms

Description of the coat of arms : "In the red shield two crossed golden torches with a silver flame above which a crown of rank with cloverleaf prongs floats in gold".

Attractions

The granite church of Hartola was built in 1911–1913 by Josef Stenbäck in the style of Finnish national romanticism; the building clearly shows the influence of Art Nouveau, but is dominated by neo-Gothic forms. The painted church windows were designed by the German artist Heinrich Schiffers.
