Sysmä is a municipality in southern Finland. It is located around 60 kilometers north of the city of Lahti on the eastern shore of Lake Päijänne .

Sysmä is located in a landscape of lakes and hills in the middle of the Finnish lake district . The mean level of Lake Päijänne is 78  m , the Kammivuori ridge reaches a height of 220  m . Part of the municipality, including the island of Päijätsalo, is part of the Päijänne National Park .

Sysmä became independent as a parish as early as 1442 . Several farms from the Baroque witness to the wealth of landowners, especially the noble family Tanderfelt. Virtaan Vanhakartano and Virtaan Kartano manors are open to the public. The stone church of St. Olaf was built at the beginning of the 16th century. The originally single-nave building was converted into a cruciform church in 1833 according to plans by Carl Ludwig Engel .

In addition to the church village Sysmä, the community includes the places Joutsjärvi, Karilanmaa, Kinnarila, Koivisto, Käenmäki, Liikola, Nikkaroinen, Nuoramoinen, Onkiniemi, Otamo, Palvala, Rapala, Ravioskorpi, Saarenkylä, Soiniemi, Toivola, Ta, Valittula, Toivola, Särkilah , Virtaa and Voipala.
