Orimattila [ ˈoriˌmɑttilɑ ] is a city in southern Finland. It is located around 20 kilometers south of the city of Lahti and around 93 km northeast of the Finnish capital Helsinki in the Päijät-Häme region .
City structure
In addition to the main town Orimattila, the city includes the villages Heinämaa, Henna, Karkkula, Keituri, Kuivanto, Leitsamaa, Luhtikylä, Mallusjoki, Niinikoski, Pakaa, Pennala, Tietävälä, Tönnö, Virenoja and Viljamaa. With the merger with the municipality of Artjärvi in January 2011, Artjärvi, Hietana, Kinttula, Ratula, Salmela, Villikkala and a few other scattered small settlements were added.
history
In Orimattila, on the upper reaches of the Porvoonjoki River, the oldest traces of human settlement on Finnish soil were found; Remains of a fireplace were dated to 8700 BC. Dated. Orimattila has existed as an administrative body since 1636, when it was separated from the municipality of Hollola as an independent parish by a decree of the Swedish Queen Christina . Orimattila was established as a political municipality in its current form in 1865, and has had city rights since 1992. The rural community grew rapidly, especially after 1945, when many refugees from Karelia, which had ceded to the Soviet Union , were settled here. On January 1, 2011 Orimattila merged with the neighboring municipality of Artjärvi .
