Asikkala [ ˈɑsikˌkɑlɑ ] is a municipality in southern Finland. It is located around 20 km north of the city of Lahti in the south of the Finnish lake district .
geography
The current capital of the municipality is Vääksy , it is located on an isthmus between the lakes Vesijärvi in the south and Päijänne in the north. The two lakes were connected with each other in 1871 with the completion of the 1,315 meter long Vääksy Canal. Today it is one of the busiest waterways in Finland. Ships only have to overcome one lock when passing through . Another canal, the Kalkkinen Canal, which is exactly 1,315 meters long, was completed in 1875 and connects the lakes Päijänne and Ruotsalainen .
The community also includes the eponymous place Asikkala and the places Anianpelto Hillilä, Iso-Äiniö, Joenniemi, Kalkkinen, Keltaniemi, Kopsuo, Kurhila, Muikkula, Mustjärvi, Myllykselä, Paakkola, Pulkkila, Pätijäro, Sätijärvi, Rivilä, Riihilahvi Vehkoo, Vesivehmaa, Viitaila, Vähimaa and Vähä-Äiniö.
Attractions
The most distinctive building in the parish is the Protestant parish church in Asikkala, which was built between 1878 and 1880 and has a particularly ornate interior for Finnish Protestantism .
The Lahti-Vesivehmaa airfield ( ICAO code EFLA) with an attached aviation museum, which exhibits some historical military aircraft not only from the Finnish air force, is also located in the municipality .
Part of the municipality is part of the Päijänne National Park , including Pulkkilanharju, an eight-kilometer-long but partly only a few meters wide headland in Lake Päijänne.
