Meerssen ( German Meersen ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg . It consists of the village of Meerssen with around 5,665 inhabitants, the village of Bunde with around 5,415 inhabitants and the smaller settlements of Geulle, the former church village of Rothem and Ulestraten.
) (Meerssen is not far from the confluence of the Geul River into the Meuse , only a few kilometers northeast of Maastricht and south of Maastricht Aachen Airport . There are some small forests in the municipality that are under nature protection. Tourism is important because of the impressive surroundings.
Many commuters who work in Maastricht live in Meerssen.
history
The area around Meerssen was already settled in pre-Roman times.
On August 8, 870, the contract named after the place for the division of Lotharingia between the West Franconian King Charles the Bald and the East Franconian King Ludwig the German is said to have been concluded in Meerssen .
The Meerssen Basilica of the Holy Sacrament , also known as St. Bartholomew's Basilica, is a well-known pilgrimage church because of a blood miracle that is said to have occurred in 1222 in the chapel of the Meerssener Benedictine monastery . It was built in the 14th century in the Maasland Gothic style and was repaired and expanded in the 1930s under the direction of the architect Jos Cuypers .
