Community structure
The community consists of ten town centers. The population is distributed among the districts as follows (in brackets the population as of January 1, 2018):
- Beegden (1,748)
- Heel en Panheel (4,451)
- Linne (3,602)
- Maasbracht en Brachterbeek (6,954)
- Ohé en Laak (801)
- Stevensweert (1,669)
- Thorn (2,410)
- Wessem (2,062)
Thorn
The district of Thorn is said to have been built around the birth of Christ. The Eburones had a temple there dedicated to the god Thor , who gave the place its name. In 1521, Thorn was included in the registers of the Holy Roman Empire as Reichsstift Thorn . It was a noble, imperial immediacy Ladies pen , a kind of monastery , but whose members took off no vow. The canonesses did not need to give all their possessions to the pen and could easily leave the community again. The imperial monastery, which was allowed to pronounce justice and mint coins, existed until it was conquered and dissolved by French troops in 1794.
Stevensweert
Stevensweert is a town that was converted into a fortress by the Spanish in 1633 during the Eighty Years War . The building of the fortress was supposed to prevent an impending blockade of shipping on the Maas after Friedrich Heinrich had conquered the surrounding cities in 1632 . The place remained Spanish as a result of the Peace of Westphalia , but was captured by the Dutch in the War of the Spanish Succession and annexed in 1715. The fortifications were razed in the 19th century. The ramparts have been partially restored.
Whom
Wessem was first mentioned in writing in 965 in the will of Bishop Brun of Cologne as Wishem . In 1118 it had a customs law for Maasschiffer and a port. In the 18th century it became a farming village. The old church was bombed in 1944.

Attractions
- The “white town” of Thorn, with its whitewashed houses and artfully laid cobblestones and pebbles, is a well-known destination.
- Ohé en Laak and Linne are located in the middle of some small nature reserves on the Meuse. In Ohé en Laak there is the Hasselholt castle, a manor house from 1548, which, however, cannot be visited. In Linner Weerd, a floodplain, there are stocks of highly endangered in the Netherlands crested newt and the red campion .
- Both Stevensweert and Wessem still have a significant number of houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
- The Maasplassen offer many opportunities for water sports; there are six marinas with a total of over 2,500 berths in the municipal area alone.
