Gaising

The Gaising , in Latvian Gaiziņkalns , is the highest point in Latvia and is around 312 meters above sea level.

It is seen from the capital Riga in an easterly direction, about halfway to the Russian border and not far from the city of Madona in the middle of a nature park .

The Gaising is a popular destination. Since the 1920s, it has been one of the winter sports centers in the country in the cold season with a drag lift and a downhill slope. A two-kilometer circular hiking trail leads all year round from the parking lot at the foot of the mountain over the summit and some viewpoints on the mountain shoulders.

Observation tower

Current wooden monument on the Gaising summit with an altitude of 312 m

A 41-meter-high observation tower was built on its summit in 1982, but it was never released for use due to inadequate foundations. On December 14, 2012, the dilapidated tower was finally blown up. A new observation tower at the same location is being planned. The start of construction is still unclear. There is currently a four-meter high wooden tower on the summit, which is a miniature of the former observation tower, but cannot be climbed, but serves as a shelter for hikers.
