Madona ( German Modohn ) is a Latvian district town in the Livonia countryside . In 2016 Madona had 7,971 inhabitants.
history
An early settlement of the urban area is proven by grave finds. The Latgals settled in the area in historical times . A Modohn estate was first mentioned in writing in 1461 when the Archbishop of Riga gave it a fief . In the Swedish time the estate was crown property . In accordance with the Nystad peace treaty , Modohn fell to the Russian Empire in 1721, as did all of Livonia . In 1760 Tsarina Catherine II donated the estate to General Alexander Borissowitsch Buturlin .
The place Madona was only created after 1903 with the opening of a railway station on the narrow-gauge line from Stockmannshof (Lat: Pļaviņas ) to Walk .
In 1925 Madona had 1,357 inhabitants and received city rights a year later .
The settlement of industry after World War II increased the population to 5,700 in 1959, and in 1967 it was 7,200.

In 2004 the following nationalities were represented in the city: Latvians: 80.3%, Russians: 14.7%, Belarusians: 1.7%, Ukrainians: 0.9%, 13 others: together 2.3%.
Town twinning
Madona has been the twin town of the Weyhe community since 1990 .

- An excursion destination in the vicinity is the Gaising , in Latvian Gaiziņkalns , the highest point in Latvia (311 m).
- In Madona there is a Lutheran Church (1805), an Orthodox Church (1866) and a Catholic Church (1934).

Broadcasting station
Madona was a radio station from 1932 to 1944. First an antenna was supported by two 116 meter high wooden towers, later a 230 meter high transmission mast was used.
Madonas novads
Madona has been the district center since 2009. The Madona district (Madonas novads) includes 14 parishes of the former Madona district. In 2010 the population was 27,732 with an area of 2153.4 km².
