Aleksandrs Starkovs (born July 26, 1955 in Madona ; Russian Александр Петрович Старков , Alexander Petrovich Starkow ) is a former Latvian football player and today's coach. As a trainer, he headed Skonto Riga and Spartak Moscow .

Starkovs trained Skonto from 1992 to 2004 and the Latvian national team from 2001 to 2004. He took over the last post after the disastrous results of the national team in the qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup and led them to their greatest success, qualifying for the 2004 European Championship with a win on the World Cup third Turkey . After this success as national coach, he moved to Spartak Moscow, but had to resign in April 2006 due to fan protests. From 2007 to 2013 he was again the Latvian national coach.

As an active player, Starkovs was active as a striker and spent most of his career at Daugava Rīga , where he scored 110 goals in 301 games.

In November 2003, on the occasion of the UEFA anniversary, the Latvian Association named him Golden Player of Latvia, the best player of the past 50 years.

In April 2017 he took over the coaching position for the Latvian national team again. After the embarrassing defeat against Gibraltar on March 25, 2018 (0: 1), Starkovs was sacked by the Latvian Association on April 3.
