Gary Johnson (born September 28, 1955 in Fulham , London , England ) is an English football coach .
Career
Cambridge United
In 1988 Johnson was appointed coach of the Cambridge United reserve team . In 1990 he became an assistant coach under John Beck , with whom he helped Cambridge to considerable success and achieved promotion to the newly created Fourth Division . In 1992 he was initially appointed interim coach and in 1993 he was appointed head coach. In 1995 Johnson was fired.
Kettering Town
After his release from Cambridge United , he became a coach at Kettering Town . In the 1996/97 season he was also released in Kettering. He then became head of the Watford FC youth academy .
Latvian national team
In 1999 he was hired by the Latvian Football Association to look after the Latvian national team . In the two years under his leadership, the Latvian team had the worst record in their international game history. After a World Cup qualifier against San Marino in April 2001, in which Latvia embarrassed itself 1-1 in front of their own audience, Johnson's involvement in the Baltic region finally ended.
Yeovil Town
On his return to England he was coach of Yeovil Town . In 2002 he won the FA Trophy with Yeovil . The following season, Yeovil rose to the Football League .
Bristol City
In 2005, Johnson signed with Bristol City after their coach Brian Tinnion was fired. In the second half of the season the tide turned and Bristol City was able to reach 9th place after a weak start to the season. In the 2006/07 season, Bristol City played an excellent season and was able to end the season in 2nd place, so that the club rose to the Football League Championship .
In September 2007, Johnson and his assistant Keith Millen signed another three-year contract that should bind them to the club until 2010.
In the 2007/08 season Bristol City was able to place in the top 6 of the Football League Championship, but then lost in the play-off final against Hull City and thus missed promotion to the Premier League . In 2008 Johnson signed another five-year contract until 2013. After two major defeats (6-0 against Cardiff City and 5-2 against Doncaster Rovers ) in the spring of 2010, Johnson was sacked.
Peterborough United
On April 6, 2010, Johnson was introduced as the new coach of Peterborough United . At this point the relegation to Football League One was already determined and the team finished the 2009/10 season as bottom of the Football League Championship. His coaching of Peterborough United ended on January 10, 2011.
Northampton Town
Johnson took over the next coaching position on March 4, 2011 at the fourth division club Northampton Town . After relegation in the 2010/11 season, a false start in League Two 2011/12 on November 14, 2011 caused his dismissal.
Yeovil Town
On January 9, 2012, he returned to Yeovil Town after more than six years and took over the coaching job from Terry Skiverton , who will be his assistant coach in the future. In 2015 he was fired from his post.
Cheltenham Town
On March 30, 2015 Johnson took over the relegation-threatened fourth division club Cheltenham Town and could no longer lead the club from the relegation zone. The contract, which expired at the end of the season, was nevertheless extended for another two years. After the 2015/16 season, he and the team succeeded in direct promotion to Football League Two . In March 2017, it became known that Johnson had heart disease. After a poor start to the 2018/19 season, with only one point from the first four match days, he was sacked just hours after a 1-1 draw with Macclesfield Town on August 21, 2018.
