Macclesfield Town (officially: Macclesfield Town Football Club ) is a football club from Macclesfield in Cheshire , England and currently plays in the National League . The club plays its home games in the Moss Rose Stadium and is nicknamed The Silkmen ( German  Die Seidenmänner ).

history

Club coat of arms used until 2008

The club was founded in the middle of the 19th century, but football rules were followed from 1874 onwards. Macclesfield Town was previously a rugby club. Until 1940 the team had different names, including Macclesfield Football and Athletic Club , Hallifield FC and Macclesfield FC. After the Second World War, the current club name was adopted.

From 1946/47 you played in the Cheshire County League , in 1968 you became a founding member of the Northern Premier League , which you could win in the first two years. After the third title in 1987, the club gained in the Football Conference , the fifth highest English division. The conference could be won in 1995, the promotion to professional football, however, the club was prohibited because the stadium did not meet the minimum standards of the Football League .

1997 succeeded with the renewed Conference Championship then promotion to the Third Division (today's Football League Two ). After the renewed promotion, the club played in the Second Division (today's Football League One ), the highest division in the club's history, but the direct relegation back to the fourth division could not be prevented. After another relegation in 2012, the club played again in the Conference National . After a successful 2017/18 season, the team also managed to return to League Two by winning the championship title.

In October 2006, the former world star and England international Paul Ince took over the position of player- coach . He should lead the club back to the third division. However, this failed and Macclesfield Town escaped relegation at the end of the season with 22nd place. After Ian Brightwell had taken over as coach since June 29, 2007, Keith Alexander joined the "Silkmen" on February 27, 2008 . However, this died a year later after a home game against Notts County of a serious illness. The previous assistant coach Gary Simpson took over his successor shortly thereafter and was also equipped with a two-year contract. After a successful season, the contract was extended early.

After relegation to the Conference National, various coach changes followed. The internal crisis of the association culminated in May 2012 with the resignation of three members of the management, including managing director Andy Scott.

After returning to the Football League, coach John Askey surprisingly announced his resignation and moved to Shrewsbury Town . For him, the previous Solihull Moors coach Mark Yates took over. After twelve games without a win, Yates was sacked in early October 2018. At the end of November, Macclesfield announced the signing of former England international Sol Campbell as the new head coach.
