The Sutton United Football Club is an English football club from the south of London located Borough of Sutton . In the 2016/17 season, the team will compete in the National League , the venue for the home games is the Borough Sports Ground .
history
The club goes back to the clubs Sutton Guild Rovers FC and Sutton Association FC , which merged on March 5, 1898. From 1921, the team entered the amateur championship Athenian League , which the club won three times. Led by Charlie Vaughan , later England's B national player, the club experienced some successes during the Second World War , when the game was reorganized due to the war, and also reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in the first stoppage season 1945/46 .
At the beginning of the 1960s, the club had another successful phase, which culminated in 1963 on the one hand with the entry into the final of the FA Amateur Cup , which was ultimately lost to FC Wimbledon , and on the other hand with the admission to the Isthmian League . Four years later, the team won the championship there, two years later they made it to the final of the FA Amateur Cup, which was lost again to FC North Shields . In the 1970s, the club attracted attention by reaching the third round of the FA Cup in 1970 and at the end of the decade under coach Keith Blunt by winning the Anglo-Italian Cup . Under Blunt's successor, Barrie Williams , the team won the FA Trophy in 1981 , and in 1980 and 1982 the club were still finalists in the Anglo-Italian Cup.
In 1985 the club again won the championship of the Isthmian League, an admission to the Football Conference was initially unsuccessful due to questions about the stadium. After successfully defending their title, the club was ultimately accepted. In 1991, the team was relegated again, but managed to return for the 1999/2000 season. After the direct relegation, the club established itself in the front table area of the Isthmian League. When the Conference South was introduced as one of the two newly introduced lower class seasons of the Football Conference by the FA 2004, the team was therefore one of the founding members. In 2007 the club rose again, four years later he returned to the Conference South.
