Notts County (officially: Notts County Football Club ) is a football club from the central English city of Nottingham . Because of their black and white striped jerseys as Magpies (dt. Magpies ) designated footballers are the traditional local rivals of the former European Cup winner Nottingham Forest . The club has played on Meadow Lane , across the River Trent across the City Ground , since 1910 . It has a capacity of 20,229 spectators.
history
Founding years and 19th century
The club was founded in 1862, a year earlier than the Football Association , the English football association. This makes Notts County Football Club the oldest professional football club in the world and the fifth oldest football club ever.
The club played its first games in Park Hollow and on a square on the grounds of Nottingham Palace. When it was decided in December 1864 to compete against other clubs, the old place quickly became too small. After nearly twenty years of wandering, the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground became the new home of the magpies in 1883 .
In 1866 the game against Nottingham Forest was the first documented derby in football history. In 1894, Notts County won the FA Cup . In 1891 they finished third in the First Division . The black and white striped jerseys were the inspiration for countless clubs, including (via detours) for Juventus Turin .
20th century: Return to the First Division
After Notts County was relegated from the First Division in 1926, many years followed in the lowlands of English football. After the club had to spend a few years in the fourth division, the 1973/74 season returned to the second division. There was also a league duel with city rivals Nottingham Forest for the first time in years . A 0: 1 home defeat and a 0: 0 at Forest did not lead to the hoped-for victory in the derby. After eight years in the second division, County finally managed the hoped-for return to the first division in 1980/81. Only West Ham United turned out to be a stronger opponent and so the team achieved promotion with second place.
The first participation in the First Division after over 50 years led the team of coach Jimmy Sirrel to 15th place in the Football League First Division 1981/82 . The strikers Iain McCulloch (40 games / 15 goals) and Trevor Christie (35/12) as well as midfielder Gordon Mair (34/9) proved to be the most accurate goal scorers . A special triumph was the 2-0 away win at Nottingham Forest. The following year led the team again in 15th place in the 1982/83 season . The team around goalkeeper Raddy Avramovic (36 games) and again the most accurate players Iain McCulloch (34/10) and Trevor Christie (33/9) were strengthened this year by Justin Fashanu (15/6), who is leaving rival Nottingham Forest would have. The third year in the Football League First Division 1983/84 should remain the last for the time being. As the bottom of the table with nine points behind a non-relegation place, relegation was sealed together with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City . A great playing Trevor Christie (39/19) and a good season from midfielder John Chiedozie (40/9) were not enough for relegation under new coach Larry Lloyd . But the team managed a successful year in the FA Cup , in which County reached the quarter-finals against FC Everton after victories over Bristol City , Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough FC . There, however, a 1: 2 home defeat caused the end of the traditional competition. At the end of the season, several players left the club. The two young defensive talents Brian Kilcline to Coventry City and Nigel Worthington to Sheffield Wednesday left the team. John Chiedozie moved to Tottenham Hotspur and Trevor Christie moved to the much more successful city rivals Nottingham Forest. The Northern Irish international Martin O'Neill (38/4), however, remained loyal to the club, which he had only joined at the start of the season from Nottingham Forest.
However, the team did not get along in the coming second division year and so the direct relegation to the third division followed. In the fifth third division season, Notts County managed to return to the Second Division, which could be increased by the direct march through to the First Division in the 1990/91 season. County finished fourth in the table at the end of the season. In the first play-off round, the team prevailed 1-1 and 1-0 against Middlesbrough FC . In the play-off final at Wembley Stadium , the hoped-for promotion followed with a 3-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion .
However, the return to the Football League First Division in 1991/92 was not permanent. This was followed by direct relegation as the table penultimate. Only West Ham United was able to leave coach Neil Warnock's team behind in the table. The offensive in particular lacked the necessary punch. Striker Tommy Johnson (31 games / 9 goals) and Kevin Bartlett (29/07) were with their goal tally still most accurate. Johnson moved to Derby County before the end of the season .
After the Premier League was introduced as the highest English division for the 1992/93 season , the team spent the next three years in the now only second-rate First Division before the crash into the third division in 1994/95.
The crew was also the favorite club of Arthur Seaton, the protagonist in Alan Sillitoe's novel Saturday night and Sunday morning .
present
On December 12th, 2009 it was announced that the club president Peter Trembling had bought the soccer club from Munto Finance.
On February 12, 2010, it was announced that Eriksson prematurely terminated his contract as director, which actually ran until 2014. The chairman of the board of directors and the club president also resigned. One of the reasons is the club's £ 1.5 million debt.
On September 8, 2011, Notts County played the opening game of the Juventus Stadium against the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . The game ended 1-1 after goals from Luca Toni and Lee Hughes . Juventus took over the jerseys from County in the early 20th century and therefore selected the third division side for this historic game.
The 2018/19 season ended for the traditional club with relegation from the fourth English division, which is now called EFL League Two . The direct return to the Football League was missed by a 3-1 loss to Harrogate Town in the final of the promotion play-offs.
