Craig Jonathan Short (born June 25, 1968 in Bridlington , England ) is a former English football player and current football coach . Most recently, he coached the English third division club Notts County .
Football career
Craig Short started his playing career in 1987 at Scarborough FC . In the 1988/89 season he reached a fifth place in the fourth division with his club and just missed promotion. Short then moved to Notts County at the age of 21 to play high-class football.
Notts County
His new club was relegated to the third division in 1985 and has been trying to get promoted since then. This was already achieved in shorts in the first season 1989/90 and was increased a year later by the direct march into the first division. The team trained by Neil Warnock finished fourth in the table in the Second Division and then won the play-off final against Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley . The season in the Football League First Division 1991/92 was less satisfactory. Notts County was only in 21st place, the penultimate place, and was immediately relegated. Craig Short subsequently decided to change clubs again and went to Derby County for £ 2,500,000 .
Derby County
Derby was relegated from the First Division in 1991 and only narrowly missed promotion last season as third in the table. The following year was all the more disappointing, as it only led to eighth place. Also in 1993/94 and 94/95 Short with his new team could not achieve promotion to the Premier League, which was newly introduced in 1992 . Despite his position as an undisputed regular player, Short's ambition to play first class again after 1991/92 prevailed and so the transfer to Everton took place .
Everton FC
The Liverpool club played continuously in the first division since 1954 and therefore guaranteed long-term prospects in the Premier League. In the 1980s, the club was one of the best clubs in the country, but recently the team found themselves more often in the middle of the table. But Everton was able to secure the title in the FA Cup last season . In the final in front of 79,592 spectators at Wembley, the club defeated Manchester United 1-0 with a goal from Paul Rideout . Shorts debut in the Premier League in 1995/96 was promising and led the club to sixth place in the table. Only two missing points on the fifth in the table Arsenal , however, caused the European Cup qualification to be missed. By winning the cup last year, Everton took part in the 1995/96 European Cup Winners' Cup, but failed there in the second round at the Dutch cup winner Feyenoord Rotterdam . After 15th place in the 1996/97 season, Everton only reached 17th place in the 1997/98 Premier League . Due to the better goal difference compared to the Bolton Wanderers , relegation to the second division could be avoided. After another season in the lower third of the table, Short moved to Blackburn Rovers in 1999 for 1,700,000 pounds . They had already wanted to sign him in 1992, but then he had decided on Derby County.
Blackburn Rovers
The Rovers had been very successful in recent years due to the millions invested by the owner. The highlight was winning the championship in the Premier League in 1994/95 by the team around Tim Flowers , Graeme Le Saux , Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton . However, Shearer had already joined Newcastle United in 1996 and the remaining players could not maintain this level. In the Premier League 1998/99 , the club even rose to the second division. Craig Short began his playing career in Blackburn so in the second division. In the 2000/01 season he was promoted to the Premier League with his new team by finishing second behind Fulham . The newly promoted finished 10th in the Premier League 2001/02 and also won the league cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 .
Christian Ziege had achieved the interim compensation for Tottenham. Eligible for the 2002/03 UEFA Cup title , Blackburn reached the second round after beating CSKA Sofia , where they lost 1-0 and 2-0 to Celtic Glasgow . In the Premier League 2002/03 , the Rovers could even increase the placement from the previous year by finishing sixth. This meant qualifying for the 2003/04 UEFA Cup , in which the Rovers, however, failed in the first round at the Turkish representative Gençlerbirliği Ankara . After two more years in 15th place, he changed clubs one last time and joined Sheffield United .
Sheffield United
His new coach in Sheffield was an old acquaintance. Neil Warnock had trained him at Notts County until 1992 . Craig Short celebrated one last success as a player in the 2005/06 season, as his team achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2006/07 by finishing second behind Reading FC . On the other hand, his playing career ended there less positively. Short was no longer used in the Premier League and United was relegated back to the second division with a goal difference that was only one goal worse than Wigan Athletic . Then Craig Short ended his playing career at the age of 39.
Coaching career
On November 30, 2009 he signed a contract with the Hungarian club Ferencváros Budapest . However, his coaching activity in Hungary was not permanent because there were differences about his coaching license. On June 4, 2010 he took over the coaching post at Notts County , for which he had been active from 1989 to 1992 as a player. County will contest the 2010/11 season after promotion to third-rate Football League One last season .
On October 24, 2010, Craig Short ended his activities in Nottingham. He is currently without a new club.
