Christian Ziege (born February 1, 1972 in West Berlin ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player . As a player, he won the European Championship in 1996 with the German national team . In addition, he was both German and Italian champions and won the UEFA Cup twice .

Career as a player

Between 1978 and 1981 Ziege played for Südstern 08 Berlin and then moved to TSV Rudow Berlin . From 1985 to 1990 he worked for Hertha Zehlendorf before joining FC Bayern Munich in 1990 . He played 185 Bundesliga games for Bayern by 1997 .

He then moved abroad, playing for AC Milan (1997-1999), Middlesbrough FC (1999/2000) and Liverpool FC (2000/01). From 2001 to summer 2004, Ziege was under contract with Tottenham Hotspur in London; An emergency operation ( fasciotomy ), which was necessary because of a compartment syndrome as a result of a horse kiss , also fell during this period . Ziege returned to Germany for the 2004/05 season . He played his last game as an active player for Borussia Mönchengladbach on May 21, 2005 (34th matchday) in the 1: 5 defeat in the away game against Bayer Leverkusen . On October 20, 2005, the then team captain of Borussia ended his career after an ankle injury.

National team

On April 30, 1991, Ziege made his debut in the German U-21 national team , which won 3-1 in Osnabrück against the Belgian selection , against which he also scored his first goal. In his twelfth and last game on April 13, 1993 in Rønne , he marked two hits in the 4-1 victory over the Danish selection .

For the Olympic team he played on February 25, 1992 in Troisdorf in a 2-1 victory over the Polish selection his only game.

Ziege played 72 times for the senior national team and scored nine goals. He made his debut on June 10, 1993 in Washington 3: 3 in an international test match against the Brazilian national team . He was a member of the DFB squad at all European and World Cup finals between 1996 and 2004. At the European Championships in England in 1996 , he made it to the final against the Czech Republic , where he prepared the equalizer for Oliver Bierhoff , who then scored the golden goal to make it 2-1 and win the title.

For winning the European Football Championship in 1996 he was honored - together with the national team - by being awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Roman Herzog .

Ziege also reached the final of the 2002 World Cup with the national team . The last time he was nominated for a tournament for the 2004 European Championship for the injured Christian Rahn . Before that, Ziege had been unable to play in the national team for almost two years.

His last international match was the 7-0 win in the preparatory international match for the 2004 European Championship on May 27, 2004 against the Maltese national team . At the EM in Portugal he was not used. After the tournament, Ziege was no longer nominated for the national team.

Career as a coach

After the end of his playing career, Ziege acquired his A-Trainer certificate at the SportCentrum Kamen-Kaiserau . From June 2006 to March 2007 he coached Borussia Mönchengladbach's U-17 juniors. He originally wanted to acquire another soccer teacher license at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Akademie in Cologne. However, he broke off this training early in order to devote himself exclusively to his job as a manager .

After Borussia Mönchengladbach had dismissed Jos Luhukay as coach on October 5th, 2008 , Ziege took over his job on a temporary basis. In his only game as an interim coach, the team played 2-2 in Bochum. On October 19, Ziege was introduced at a press conference as a new assistant at the side of Hans Meyer . The change was suggested by Ziege himself in internal discussions. On December 15, 2008, Ziege announced his resignation as assistant coach. The reasons given were private and personal aspects.

In April 2010 he got his soccer teacher diploma at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Akademie of the German Sport University Cologne . After that, Ziege was head coach of the second division Arminia Bielefeld from the beginning of the 2010/11 season , who fired him on November 6, 2010.

In April 2011, Ziege was introduced as the future coach of the U-19 national team. There he succeeded Ralf Minge , who had previously trained the team. In August 2011, Ziege took over the U-18 national team at the DFB and continued training as a U-19 team the following year. In 2013 he took over the U18 again, which was meanwhile trained by Horst Hrubesch . His contract, which expired in summer 2014, was not extended by the DFB.

On March 20, 2014, Ziege became the new trainer of SpVgg Unterhaching . He resigned on March 25, 2015, citing "changed framework conditions" as the reason.

The Spanish third division team Atlético Baleares signed Ziege as their new head coach at the end of November 2015. On March 15, 2017, the club announced that Christian Ziege had been released from his duties with immediate effect.

On January 1, 2018, Ziege took up the post of coach at the Thai club Ratchaburi Mitr Phol . He ended the collaboration with the first division club after six weeks.

In April 2019, Ziege was introduced as the new head coach of the Austrian regional league club FC Pinzgau Saalfelden , where he will also coach his son Alessandro.

Career as a manager

On March 8, 2007, Christian Ziege succeeded sports director Peter Pander at Borussia Mönchengladbach . After relegation from the Bundesliga in summer 2007, 13 players left the club. Ziege then put together an almost completely new team , which was then immediately promoted again. In June 2008 the current contract with Ziege was prematurely extended to the end of June 2011. However, Ziege gave up the post prematurely to Max Eberl on October 19, 2008 due to his new role as assistant coach .
