Career as a consultant, manager and television expert

After his career as a player, Strunz worked as a players agent for various players.

From January 1 to December 19, 2005, Strunz was the successor to Peter Pander, who resigned on August 24, 2004, as manager and managing director at VfL Wolfsburg . After Eric Gerets was dismissed and the lack of success under the new coach Holger Fach , Strunz also came under fire. After the first half of the 2005/06 season, VfL Wolfsburg dismissed Strunz and the coach Holger Fach he had brought in. Both received severance pay.

Since April 19, 2008 Strunz was the sporting director of the regional league club Rot-Weiss Essen . With a 5-year plan, he wanted to lead the ailing traditional club back into the 2nd Bundesliga. In addition, he has looked after the team as team boss since the 2009/10 season. After a 2-0 defeat on September 11, 2009 against the second team of 1. FC Köln, Strunz was relieved of all duties with immediate effect.

For a long time Strunz worked as an expert for the television channel Sport 1 . He was there alternately in the studio or on site in the stadium. Every Monday evening he analyzed the previous Bundesliga matchday in the Telekom Gameday Analysis program . From 2011 to 2018, Strunz was a regular guest as an expert on the soccer talk show Doppelpass . He replaced the previous expert Udo Lattek . At the end of the 2018 World Cup , Strunz ended his commitment as an expert on one-two. His last appearance was at the Check 24 World Cup one-two on July 15, 2018, where he was bid farewell to his long-term companion (as a player at Bayern Munich and in various sport1 formats) and one-two moderator Thomas Helmer after 7 years.

In addition, he was again active as a player consultant in TS Sports OHG in Düsseldorf as a managing partner. However, this was bought in June 2018 by the arena11 sports group GmbH from Grünwald near Munich.

Private life

Strunz hit the headlines when his former teammate Stefan Effenberg started a relationship with his wife Claudia . Strunz was married to her for the second time from 1997 to 2002; they have a daughter and a son. He also has a son with his first wife Beate. In 2006 he had another daughter from his current partner, Stephanie.

Popular culture

Giovanni Trapattoni , then coach of Bayern Munich, had an outburst of anger at a press conference in 1998 and also railed against his player Strunz: "What do Strunz allow ?!"

This was followed by the title of the TV magazine Was allow Strunz with Claus Strunz , which ran on N24 from 2004 to 2010 .

Trapattoni criticized Strunz's frequent injury-related sideline ("Is always injured!"). Trapattoni actually wanted to pillory Strunz 'teammates Mario Basler and Mehmet Scholl , who had previously criticized Trapattoni publicly. While Basler and Scholl were also briefly criticized in Trapattoni's three-and-a-half-minute speech, Strunz - who had not criticized Trapattoni at all - suddenly found himself, surprisingly, at the center of Trapattoni's criticism.

Strunz himself later explained: "Giovanni put all three names that were given to him in a sack and patted them."

Years later, Trapattoni apologized for the criticism of Strunz: "Thomas was basically innocent and that's why everything went so unhappy."

While the angry speech was initially "unpleasant", Strunz can now laugh about it.

The level of awareness of Strunz was also increased through Trapattoni's angry speech. Strunz once stated: “But it actually made my name more popular. When I was on the ball, people would shout 'Struuunz'. I had my trademark. "
