Stefan Reuter (born October 16, 1966 in Dinkelsbühl ) is a former German footballer and currently manager of FC Augsburg . In his active career he has won the most important national and international titles, he was world champion , European champion , Champions League winner and five-time German champion .

Career as a player

In his youth, Reuter played at TSV 1860 Dinkelsbühl from Middle Franconia , before he was signed by the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg when he was not yet 16 years old . There he developed into a youth national player (see below). Ten days before his 18th birthday, he made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga (9th matchday) in a 3-2 win in the away game against Kickers Offenbach , rose to the Bundesliga with the “Club” at the end of the season and stayed there until 1987/88 . In addition to the 125 point games, he played three games in the DFB Cup and scored two goals.

This was followed by three seasons with league rivals FC Bayern Munich , for which Reuter played 95 league (4 goals), 10 UEFA Cup (1 goal) and 12 national championship (3 goals) games and won three titles. After only one season in Italy with the first division club Juventus Turin , Reuter returned to Germany and stayed with the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund until the end of his career in 2003/04 . He won eight titles with Dortmund in 12 seasons and made it to the UEFA Cup final twice in 1993 and 2002 .

National team

As a youth national player, Reuter took part in the finals of the 2nd UEFA U-16 competition, which took place in Germany from May 1 to 6 , after the team prevailed against the Netherlands as group winners in qualifying and in the quarter-finals . With the 5: 1 successful semifinals in Heilbronn over Yugoslavia, he secured (as a substitute) with the team on May 5, 1984 in Ulm, with a 2-0 victory over the Soviet Union, the title of U-16 European champions .

He also played for the U-18 national team (seven times in a row after his debut on January 14, 1985 in Leningrad  - as part of the Granatkin memorial tournament - in the 5-1 victory over Poland), as well as for the U-21 National team , for which he debuted on September 24, 1985 in Eskilstuna in the 1: 2 defeat against Sweden and also scored two goals in the course. He also took part in the military world championship in Italy in 1987 with the Bundeswehr national team and took second place.

On April 18, 1987 Reuter played for the first time for the senior national team . His first of 69 appearances began with the substitution for Wolfgang Rolff in the 63rd minute in the 0-0 draw against Italy in Cologne. His first of two international goals he scored in the 90th minute to the 1-1 draw on December 12, 1987 in Brasília against Brazil . Reuter took part in both the 1990 and 1998 World Championships and the 1992 and 1996 European Championships . His last game was the first round match against the USA on June 15, 1998 in Paris , which was won 2-0.

As a member of the 1990 World Cup team, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .

Career as a manager

From July 1, 2004 to January 3, 2005, Reuter worked as an assistant to the management team at Borussia Dortmund in the sponsoring area. On January 23, 2006, he then took up his position as managing director of TSV 1860 Munich with responsibility for sports. After his colleague Stefan Ziffzer , who was responsible for finances , resigned without notice , Reuter was sole managing director for three months from May 13, 2008 until Markus Kern was appointed another managing director on August 13, 2008. On February 2, 2009, Miroslav Stević was introduced as the new sports director at TSV 1860. One day later, Reuter rejected an offer to continue working in management with limited competencies as unacceptable and was then given leave of absence with immediate effect. His contract expired on June 30, 2009.

On December 27, 2012, FC Augsburg introduced him as the successor to Jürgen Rollmann as the new Sport Director. Under Reuter's tenure, FC Augsburg qualified for the Europa League for the first time in the 2014/15 season .

Stefan Reuter's current contract with FCA runs until June 30, 2023.

In his youth, Reuter was also a successful athlete . He won district championships in long jump and was Bavarian champion in cross-country running . He also kept this basic athletic training as a player. His dynamic start (100 m in 11.2 seconds) earned him the nickname Turbo .

Stefan Reuter is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Football Foundation. The Youth Football Foundation was founded in 2000 by Reuter, Jürgen Klinsmann, as well as other German national players who were successful at the time, and the lecturers of the football teacher special course. Stefan Reuter was the last world champion active in German professional football in 1990.
