Paul Steiner (born January 23, 1957 in Waldbrunn ) is a former German soccer player . From 1981 to 1991 Steiner, who served his first professional years at SV Waldhof Mannheim , had almost 300 appearances in the Bundesliga for 1. FC Cologne , with whom he won the DFB Cup in 1983 . When he won the World Cup in 1990 , he was the oldest player in the German squad.

Career

Waldhof Mannheim

Steiner began his career in his home town of Waldbrunn at TSV Strümpfelbrunn. In 1975 he came to SV Waldhof Mannheim and played his first professional season in the 2nd Bundesliga . In his first year, coach Anton Rudinski built on the then 18-year-old. Steiner formed the Mannheim defensive network with Günter Sebert , Reinhold Gölz and Klaus Link . The central defender made his debut on August 9, 1975 on matchday 1 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , when Mannheim lost 2-0. Steiner scored his first league goal on matchday three against the Stuttgarter Kickers . He gave his team a 1-0 lead, but the game was turned around by Horst Haug from Stuttgart , who scored four goals. In the following seasons, too, Steiner was one of Mannheim's top performers, he never played fewer than 33 games for the club in the following three years.

MSV Duisburg

In the summer of 1979 Steiner decided to move to the Bundesliga for MSV Duisburg. There he replaced Ditmar Jakobs, who had been transferred to Hamburger SV . Steiner made his debut for the zebras on August 11, 1979 in the game against VfB Stuttgart . As a regular player, he made a decisive contribution to the fact that MSV was able to hold the class twice in a row. In December 1979, Heinz Flohe (then TSV 1860 Munich ) suffered a broken tibia and fibula as a result of a foul by Steiner, which ended Flohe's career.

1. FC Cologne

In order to improve his sporting skills, he moved to 1. FC Köln two years after signing the contract with Duisburg. As with his previous clubs, Steiner was able to assert himself and became a regular player straight away. His five goals in the Bundesliga season 1982/83 were the best goal yield for him. In the same year he was able to celebrate his first national title. In the final of the DFB Cup, the Cologne team faced city rivals SC Fortuna Köln , whom they defeated 1-0. In the 1985/86 UEFA Cup season , the billy goats also qualified for the final. After the first leg was lost 5-1 at Real Madrid , they won the second leg 2-0, but that wasn't enough. For Steiner, who was still a regular in 1989/90 and had played his way into the national team, the following season was disappointing. After only one more use for the Cologne team on the 1st matchday in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf , in which Steiner injured himself and was substituted in the 18th minute, he announced his retirement from professional football in the summer of 1991.

National team

When asked whether the national team was an issue for him, Steiner replied: "No, they always play on Wednesdays, so I don't have time."

In 1990 Steiner was unexpectedly appointed to the German national team, as team boss Franz Beckenbauer wanted to fill every position twice at the World Cup. The then 33-year-old Steiner was designated as a substitute in the event that Klaus Augenthaler should be absent. Shortly before the World Cup tournament, Steiner made his first and only appearance in the DFB dress. On May 30, 1990, he was substituted on in the friendly against Denmark at halftime for Augenthaler. He was then able to celebrate winning the World Cup without going to Italy .

In addition to an assignment in the A team, Steiner completed five B international games, and he also played two games for Germany's Olympic team.

After the career

In 1997 Steiner was accepted into the Bayer 04 Leverkusen scout team . There he was primarily responsible for video analysis and worked in the scouting area. He held this position for Leverkusen until the end of the 2007/08 season. From the 2008/2009 season he worked in the same position at 1. FC Cologne. After three years, Steiner left 1. FC Köln in May 2011.

Criticized quotes

Paul Steiner's public statement on the subject of homosexuality in professional football is widely quoted : "I cannot imagine that gays can play football." ... "Gays are far too soft for football." Steiner said he should talk to the Nuremberg player Souleyman Sané Said in a game like this: "Fuck niggers, get away! What do you want in Germany? ”. Steiner denied having said that; nevertheless the incident provoked a lively discussion.
