Günter Sebert (born May 29, 1948 in Mannheim ) is a former football player and coach.
player
Günter Sebert began his career in 1957 as a nine-year-old in the D-Jugend of SV Waldhof Mannheim before he was appointed to the first team in 1967. During his active time, Sebert was only active for SV Waldhof. He played around 700 competitive games for the blue-blacks, 128 of them in the Bundesliga, in which he scored 13 goals. He is the honorary captain and with 592 completed point games he is the record player at SV Waldhof Mannheim. In 1983 Sebert led the Waldhöfer as captain for promotion to the Bundesliga. The best placement there was sixth in the 1984/85 season . Sebert ended his playing career in 1987 at the age of 39.
Trainer
In 1986 Sebert began to work on his coaching career in addition to his work as captain of SV Waldhof. From 1986 to 1988 Sebert was assistant coach of the blue-blacks. From 1988 to 1991 Sebert was chief trainer at Waldhöfer. He reached twelfth place with the team in 1988/89 , but had to relegate with the Waldhöfern the following year. Sebert then went through a few coaching positions at Hertha BSC , the Stuttgarter Kickers and 1. FC Nuremberg before returning to SV Waldhof Mannheim for a year in 1996 . From 1997 to 2001 Sebert coached local rivals VfR Mannheim . One of his greatest successes as a coach was the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with the regional division SSV Jahn Regensburg in 2003. Sebert was sacked after differences with the then Regensburg board. This decision was considered controversial among the fans of SSV Jahn Regensburg and was named as one of the reasons why the SSV had to accept relegation to the Regionalliga Süd again in the same season . This was followed by his last coaching position at SV Sandhausen from 2003 to 2005 .
