youth

Aumann began in 1970 in the football department of the Stadtwerke SV Augsburg and moved in 1976 in the youth department of FC Augsburg where he completed four seasons with the B Youth -Mannschaft on 29 July 1979 at the final of the German Youth Championship Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin with Losing 4: 5 on penalties .

In 1980 he was signed by FC Bayern Munich, for whose A youth team he played for two years and in 1982 moved up to the professional squad as the fourth goalkeeper behind Manfred Müller , Walter Junghans and the Belgian Jean-Marie Pfaff .

FC Bayern Munich

After Junghans (September 1982) and Müller (summer 1984) left, Aumann and Pfaff fought fierce competition for the regular spot in the Bayern-Tor, which culminated in Pfaff slapping Aumann during a training session. On August 25, 1984 (1st matchday) Aumann completed his first Bundesliga game , which he and his team won 3-1 in the away game against Arminia Bielefeld . From that moment on he was “number 1” and remained so until his cruciate ligament rupture in March 1986. For the 1986/87 season he was then out and only returned on September 26, 1987 (10th match day) - at 4-1 -Win the away game against FC Schalke 04 - back to the game. At the end of the season - the Bayern leadership was tired of the eternal dispute between Pfaff and Aumann - Pfaff left the club and Aumann remained a regular goalkeeper until 1994. With the exception of the 1991/92 season, which was marked by an injury, he always played 32 in his last six Bayern seasons or more league games.

He had his final breakthrough on December 7, 1988 in the San Siro Stadium in the 3-1 win over Inter Milan in the second leg of the round of 16 for the UEFA Cup , when he made it into the quarter-finals with a brilliant performance.

In the second leg of the European Cup semi-finals on April 24, 1991 against Red Star Belgrade , the eventual winner of the European Cup , he caused an own goal in the 90th minute for a 2-2 draw. As a result, he prevented, due to the 1: 2 defeat in the first leg at the Olympic Stadium in Munich , a possible extension of the move into the final.

After the 6th matchday of the 1991/92 season, Aumann suffered a serious knee injury again and was again out for months. Since Sven Scheuer was also out as a regular substitute goalkeeper due to an injury, the Bavarians, on Aumann's advice, hired his friend Toni Schumacher , who played eight Bundesliga games until the winter break after the other two substitute goalkeepers Gerald Hillringhaus and Uwe Gospodarek were unable to convince. Aumann played 32 of 34 Bundesliga games in his last season, his last on May 7, 1994 (34th matchday) in a 2-0 win at home against FC Schalke 04. In the twelve seasons in Munich he was German champion six times , each twice DFB Cup and DFB Supercup winner. From 1992 to 1994 he was team captain of FC Bayern Munich, but resigned from this position - after differences with coach Erich Ribbeck - in January 1994. From 1988 to 1994 he was one of the best goalkeepers in Germany and in 1994 he was named the best “goalkeeper of the season” by the kicker sports magazine .

Beşiktaş Istanbul

After Bayern had signed Oliver Kahn as a newcomer for the 1994/95 season , Aumann moved to Turkey for the first division side Beşiktaş Istanbul , with whom he became champion in 1995 under coach Christoph Daum .

National team

Aumann made his debut in the national jersey on April 23, 1980 in Bern in the 3-0 victory of the U-16 national team against the Swiss national team.

For the U-18 national team , he played 13 international matches from 1980 to 1982. He made his debut on November 4, 1980 in Tongeren in a 2-2 draw against Belgium. He took part with the national team at the U-18 European Championship held in Finland from May 21 to 30, 1982 , and played all three group matches . The last one that was lost 1-0 to the Soviet Union on May 25 in Turku was also his last in this selection.

From October 16, 1984 to October 15, 1985, Aumann played seven international matches for the U-21 national team . He finished his debut in Münster in the European Championship qualifier against Sweden's selection with a 1-0 victory, as did his last appearance in Karlsruhe in a 2-0 win over Portugal .

He made his senior national team debut on September 6, 1989 in Dublin in a 1-1 draw in the friendly against Ireland, with a substitute for Bodo Illgner in the second half . His last of four international matches he completed on October 10, 1990 in Solna against the selection of Sweden ; the 3-1 win he played for the first time over 90 minutes. He was part of the squad of the national team that won the title at the 1990 World Cup in Italy .

In the run-up to this World Cup , the discussion about the "number 1" flared up again when Aumann was rated well in the two semi-finals of the European Cup against AC Milan (0: 1 A and 2: 1 afterwards). The discussion fell silent on April 25, 1990, when Aumann had to accept all three goals and did not make a good impression in the 3-3 draw in the World Cup preparatory game against the selection of Uruguay - who came on for Illgner in the second half; henceforth Aumann was the goalkeeper behind Illgner. He took part in the 1990 World Cup, where the German team became world champions, but had no use. His serious knee injury in 1991 and differences of opinion with national coach Berti Vogts ended his career in the national team early; Andreas Köpke took his place and later became a regular goalkeeper.
