The eleven-year old Mark Sway and his eight year old brother Ricky will actually only one cigarette smoke in the forest when she about the Mafia - Attorney Jerome Clifford from New Orleans trip, which is just about to take his own life. Mark, who does not want to stand idly by, is overwhelmed by Clifford and involuntarily learns the hiding place of the corpse of an American senator who killed Clifford's client Barry Muldanno .

Mark escapes from the car, but not without leaving traces. Roy Foltrigg , a New Orleans district attorney who has been hunting for evidence of the murder for months , desperately wants to interrogate Mark. At the same time, however, the boy is put under pressure by the mafia. Desperate, Mark turns to lawyer Reggie Love . The first thing she tries is to get Mark out of the line of fire. Both Foltrigg and the Mafia are now also attacking Mark's lawyer.

However, Mark is not up to the events, causing trouble and leading to his being taken into protective custody. By pretending to be PTS , he is taken to the hospital and is able to escape. Ultimately, there is only one way out for both of them: The senator's body must be found.

The novel ends with Mark and his family being included in the witness protection program after informing the prosecutor of the whereabouts of the senator's body.

series

Only one season of the television series , which was filmed in 1995/96 and based on the novel , was produced due to a lack of success .
