John Heard (born March 7, 1946 in Washington, DC - July 21, 2017 in Palo Alto , California ) was an American actor .

Life

John Heard graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington (DC) in 1964 and from Clark University in Worchester , Massachusetts in 1968 . Heard first made a name for himself as a stage actor in the 1970s. Heard received a 1977 Theater World Award and the Obie Award for his role as Ivy Leaguer Micah Broad Street in GR Point , one of David Berry written play about the Vietnam War . Heard won a second Obie Award two years later for his performance in Othello .

As an actor before the camera Heard debuted in the TV Drama Valley Forge from 1975. In the comedy Head Over Heels (1979) he played the lead role. He played other leading roles alongside Jeff Bridges as a paranoid, war-disabled Vietnam veteran in the neo-noir thriller Cutter's Way - No Mercy (1981) and alongside Nastassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell in the thriller Katzenmen (1982). In 1987 he was nominated for a CableACE Award for his role in the miniseries Tender Is the Night (1985) . In the course of the 1980s, the versatile actor shifted increasingly to the representation of supporting roles. In the comedies Kevin - Alone at Home (1990) and Kevin - Alone in New York (1992), he played the role of Peter McCallister, the father of Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin .

In the thriller The Killer Brigade , Heard starred alongside Gene Hackman , Joanna Cassidy and Tommy Lee Jones and in The Files (1993) he starred alongside Julia Roberts in the role of an FBI agent. In the comedy Desert Blue (1998) he took on the role of Prof. Lance Davidson , the father of Skye Davidson ( Kate Hudson ). For his appearances in the television series The Sopranos , he was nominated for an Emmy in 1999. From 2005 to 2006 he appeared in ten episodes of the television series Prison Break . His work includes more than 170 film and television productions.

Heard married actress Margot Kidder in 1979 , from whom he was divorced that year. He later married Sharon Heard; the marriage resulted in two children. A son emerged from his association with actress Melissa Leo . John Heard was found dead in a hotel room in Palo Alto on July 21, 2017. He had died of a heart attack two days after a minor operation on his back .
