action

Richie Furst is studying mathematics at Princeton University and is about to embark on a lucrative career on Wall Street . Since he hardly has any reserves to pay the tuition fees of 60,000 US dollars , he also places other students in an online poker game and receives a small commission for it. When the university finds out, they threaten to ban him from studying. He risks all of his savings to win the fee he needs from an online poker game; however, he loses everything in the last game. Richie senses a cheater behind it and can prove this with the help of statistics. He travels to Costa Rica to meet Ivan Block - who runs the world's largest online poker platform - with his results. He initially rejects him, but then gives him the money back and explains that there was a programming error behind the fraud. Richie also receives an offer from him to work for him. Ivan assures Richie that he can become a millionaire within a year. He accepts the job and in time begins an affair with Ivan's ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Shafran.

One day, Richie is kidnapped by FBI agent Eric Shavers, who threatens to ruin his life in various ways if he doesn't help get Ivan to jail. Richie refuses to believe that Ivan is conducting illegal business and continues to stand by him. Over time, however, he began to have doubts, and his friend Andrew Cronin, whom Ivan had flown to Costa Rica from New York , also discovered that the online portal worked according to a pyramid scheme. This almost kills Andrew as he is beaten almost to death by Block's men. Ivan slowly realizes that Richie is a danger. He lets his indebted father fly in, buys his debt and blackmailed Richie with it.

Meanwhile, Richie tries to fly home again, but is stopped by Shavers. He is now joining forces with him. They realize that Ivan has the local police under his wing. Thus it cannot be extradited to the USA. Richie learns from Rebecca that Ivan wants to give up his business in Costa Rica and start over in Antigua . He also learns that Ivan has falsified evidence and that he is now supposed to be a scapegoat. He and Rebecca forge a plan. Ivan believes his plan will work and leaves Costa Rica. Little does he know that Richie bribed all the important people, including Ivan's pilot. This landed the jet in Puerto Rico , which is a US territory . Ivan is arrested and Richie gives Shavers a USB stick with evidence that Andrew previously hidden. Meanwhile, Richie and Rebecca fly away in Ivan's private jet.

background

The film was shot in Puerto Rico and Princeton University from June to August 2012 . Some parts of the script are based on the life of poker player Nat Arem who discovered an online poker fraud.

The name of the film, "Runner Runner", is a poker term that describes a player who has to be dealt two consecutive ("running") cards in Texas Hold'em as a turn card and as a river card in order to have a chance with his hand by getting a flush or a straight . The probability of this is compared in the film with the probability of being able to work on the stock exchange: 4 percent.

reception

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews.

"At first glance, Brad Furman's thriller 'Runner Runner', with its star cast and lavish show values, is a big number, but under the shiny surface of the exotic film cocktail there is little substance or narrative substance."

- Filmstarts.de

“(...) Timberlake ('The Social Network'), who seems to be a bit overwhelmed in the protagonist role, is less convincing. Several subplots, for example, about a harsh FBI agent or Richie's game-addicted father, only contribute to a limited extent to enrich the story. On the other hand, the innovative camera work and the exciting orchestral score are positively noticeable. The glossy poker production would like to pretend to be high rollers, but remains standard.
