action

The rap legend Tupac Shakur was first shot in 1996 , followed a few months later by his colleague and competitor The Notorious BIG. background

The first trailer for City of Lies was released on May 21, 2018 , which would also have been The Notorious BIG's 46th birthday

In the 1990s, both Tupac Shakur and his rap colleague The Notorious BIG were murdered within a few weeks . In both cases, the perpetrators could never be identified. Tupac was gunned down on September 7, 1996 and died six days later from his injuries. Some suspected that the perpetrator belonged to the environment of The Notorious BIG. He was the victim of a drive-by shoot on March 9, 1997 after attending the Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles .

In 2002, journalist Randall Sullivan published a factual novel called LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG, the Implication of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal , in which he investigates the two murders. After the book was published, it sparked controversy. Poole had linked both Suge Knight , founder of Death Row Records , and the Los Angeles police force to the murders. To date, these allegations have neither been proven nor refuted.

production

Directed by Brad Furman . The script, which is based on Sullivan's factual novel, was written by Christian Contreras and landed on Hollywood's 2015 Black List of the best unmoved screenplays .

The lead roles were played by Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker , who play Russell Poole and Jack Jackson. Toby Huss plays Detective Fred Miller and Dayton Callie plays Lieutenant O'Shea.

The shooting took place in Los Angeles , for example at Dedeaux Field, the baseball stadium of the University of Southern California.

On May 21, 2018, the first trailer for City of Lies was released, which would also have been Biggie's 46th birthday. This was underlaid with the song You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You) from the artist's album Life After Death . The music for the film itself was composed by the film composer Chris Hajian , who was also born in New York .

The film was originally scheduled to hit US theaters on September 7, 2018, the anniversary of Tupac's death. There the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a release from the age of 17. The film should start in German cinemas on October 25, 2018. In August 2018, both the start in the USA and Germany were canceled for unknown reasons.
