The following has to be improved:  Arbitrary compilation of individual cases in reality and fiction, but not an encyclopedia article.

The English term drive-by-shooting (colloquially just drive-by ) comes from the USA and describes an attack with firearms from a vehicle driving past the victim.

Drive-bys are common all over the world. They were also perpetrated by the Italian Cosa Nostra , the American La Cosa Nostra , the IRA , African rebel groups such as the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) or the Revolutionary United Front, and in the Middle East by terrorist organizations on politicians or the military.

1920s: Chicago and New York

A special variant of such an action is when the victim is himself in a vehicle and tries to escape. The Chicago outfit was also involved in such an approach ; on May 25, 1925, Angelo Genna ( Genna family ) was the victim of such an attack. This is probably one of the most dramatic incidents of its kind that has ever occurred. Angelo Genna returned fire at the pursuers from the moving car. The collision of his vehicle with a lantern was his undoing, since he was helpless in the further hail of bullets.

In 1927 Jacob Orgen was murdered using this method in the fourth "Labor Slugger War" ; his bodyguard Jack Diamond was wounded. On July 1, 1928, Frankie Yale was similarly shot in his car. This murder was also the first in New York to use a Thompson submachine gun , as in Chicago .

More recent examples

Prominent rappers were also targeted in the United States. In 1996, Tupac Shakur was the victim of a drive-by shoot in Las Vegas. In 1997, The Notorious BIG was shot the same way in Los Angeles. In 2004 the rapper Mac Dre also died in an attack of this kind, as did the NFL player Darrent Williams on January 1, 2007 . In 2012 the Georgian general Roman Dumbadze died in Moscow during a drive-by shoot. That same year, Griselda Blanco , a convicted Colombian drug smuggler, was murdered in Colombia. In both cases, two perpetrators shot their victim from a passing motorcycle. On May 23, 2014, six people were killed and seven others seriously injured in several drive-bys by a young man in the US state of California .

Adaptations

films and series

Drive-by shoots appeared early in film history and have since been - like car chases - a popular feature in crime films and agent thrillers.

In particular, the following should be mentioned:

Computer games

In the game The Godfather there are several levels in which the player drives a car while a computer-controlled player shoots a Thompson submachine gun through the broken rear window.

In Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven , drive-by shoots are carried out using the mouse. This should lead to greater realism through the possibility of more precise aiming, the camera perspective that moves with the mouse, as well as the necessary concentration on driving the car and on aiming. The same technical solution is used in the console games Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto IV .

In the Grand Theft Auto video game series in particular , the use of weapons through to throwing explosive charges is part of the game principle that is always possible and can in principle always take place from within the vehicle. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas there is a mission in which the element of drive-by shooting plays an important role.
