report
training
Friday training
Coulthard drove the fastest lap in front of Häkkinen with 1: 19.989 minutes, followed by Michael Schumacher, Villeneuve, Irvine and Damon Hill. All drivers were placed within six seconds.
Saturday training
Again a McLaren was fastest, this time with Häkkinen ahead of Coulthard in a time of 1: 17.337 minutes. He was followed in third place by Michael Schumacher, who was around one and a half seconds behind Häkkinen with a time of 1: 18.588 minutes. All drivers were placed within six seconds.
Qualifying
Mika Häkkinen achieved pole position with a time of 1: 16.973 minutes, the only driver with a time below 1:17 minutes. Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Eddie Irvine followed. All drivers were placed within six seconds.
Warm-up
Mika Häkkinen also achieved the fastest lap time in the warm-up with 1: 18.694 minutes, almost a second ahead of his team-mate David Coulthard. They were followed by Frentzen, both Schumacher brothers and Villeneuve. All drivers were within five seconds.
run
Both McLaren started the race well, followed by Schumacher and Irvine, who was able to overtake Hill. On lap 13 Irvine and Tuero retired from the race due to electrical failure or transmission problems. On lap 43 Ross Brawn changed his strategy and switched to a three-stop strategy. As a result, Schumacher was sent out on the track with little fuel and came out of the pit lane before Coulthard. With a clear track in front of him, Schumacher set the fastest lap times in a row and caught up with the leader Mika Häkkinen. On lap 46 Schumacher finally overtook the leader and pulled away from him. On lap 62, Schumacher stopped for the last time and stayed in the lead. The situation for Schumacher was favored by the fact that Häkkinen suffered from problems with the shock absorbers, which threw him back to sixth place while his competitor for the world championship won the race. There was a scandal on the last lap because the fans were let out on the track way too early. In October 1998, the route operators were fined $ 1 million, of which $ 750,000 was suspended. Since no similar incidents had happened after two years, the fine was reduced to $ 250,000.
