The 1996 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 11, 1996 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the twelfth race of the 1996 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the German Grand Prix , Damon Hill led the drivers' standings with 79 points, 21 points ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and 42 points ahead of Jean Alesi .

Williams-Renault led the constructors' championship with 125 points, 78 points ahead of Benetton-Renault and 87 points ahead of Ferrari .

With Hill (1993, 1995) and Schumacher (1994) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

Williams-Renault collected enough points to secure the constructors' championship for the eighth time.

In the first free practice session on Friday, Damon Hill set the fastest lap ahead of Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve . On Saturday, in the second training run, Michael Schumacher was able to secure the fastest time in front of the Williams drivers Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher secured pole position with a time of 1: 17.129 minutes in front of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

In the warm-up, Michael Schumacher secured the fastest time ahead of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

Michael Schumacher maintained the top position at the start. Already in the first lap there was a collision between Mika Salo , Pedro Lamy and Jos Verstappen , as a result of which all three drivers were eliminated in the course of the race. After Jacques Villeneuve took the lead on lap 19, he had to hand it over to his teammate Damon Hill just three laps later.

When Hill pitted on the following lap, Villeneuve took the lead again and did not give it up until lap 59. After Hill took the lead one more time, Villeneuve took the lead one last time and never gave it up until the finish line. Damon Hill was second, Benetton driver Jean Alesi third .

Damon Hill set the fastest race lap with 1: 20.093 minutes.
