The 1992 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 16 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the eleventh race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Eric van de Poele switched from Brabham to Fondmetal to where Andrea Chiesa to replace, who ended his Formula 1 career after just a few months. In time for this change, a new GR02 chassis was completed after the model used by Chiesa was irreparably damaged during training for the French Grand Prix . Brabham hired no replacement driver, so Damon Hill was the only pilot for the team.

training

For the first time in the current season, Riccardo Patrese was able to achieve the best time in practice and thus relegate his team-mate Nigel Mansell , who had reached pole position nine times in the past ten race weekends, to second place on the grid. Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher formed the second row in front of their respective teammates Gerhard Berger and Martin Brundle .

run

Patrese took the lead from pole position. In order to avoid a collision with his teammate, Mansell had to take off the accelerator for a moment, which enabled the two McLaren drivers Senna and Berger to overtake him. Further back in the field, the two Ligier pilots Érik Comas and Thierry Boutsen collided , causing them to spin. Johnny Herbert and Gabriele Tarquini could not evade in time and were thus involved in the accident. All four pilots involved could not continue the race.

Mansell passed Berger on the eighth lap. When attempting to overtake Senna, however, he made a mistake on lap 31, which brought Berger back to third place. Three laps later, Mansell passed him again. When Patrese initially fell behind after a driving mistake and finally had to retire due to an engine failure, Mansell was in second place, which theoretically was enough to secure the world title early in the eleventh of 16 races of the season. However, due to an unscheduled pit stop, he dropped to sixth place 15 laps before the end of the race. He then profited from Schumacher's failure, which was triggered by a broken rear wing as a result of a collision with his team-mate Brundle.

After Nigel Mansell had overtaken Mika Häkkinen , Martin Brundle and Gerhard Berger within seven laps , he was again in second place. On the 73rd lap, Häkkinen overtook Brundle, whose sixth gear was no longer working at the time. In the course of an unsuccessful overtaking maneuver against Berger, Häkkinen spun. When trying to avoid a collision with it, Berger also turned. Both were able to continue the race without losing position. So Senna won ahead of Mansell, Berger, Häkkinen and Brundle. Ivan Capelli received the last World Championship point of the day in sixth place.

By winning the world title after the eleventh of 16 races of the season, Nigel Mansell set a record that was only broken ten years later by Michael Schumacher.
