Reports

background

After the German Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with 34 points ahead of Mark Webber and 44 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Red Bull-Renault led with 53 points ahead of Ferrari and with 70 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes .

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (four times), Jenson Button , Lewis Hamilton (twice), Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen , Heikki Kovalainen and Webber (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Gerd Ennser (DEU), Lajos Herczeg (HUN), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Danny Sullivan (USA) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of his teammates Button and Alonso. This training took Jules Bianchi the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg , Valtteri Bottas the Williams of Bruno Senna and Dani Clos the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan . In the second free practice session it started to rain during practice. In the process, Schumacher lost control of a vehicle and demolished the front of his car in an accident. Hamilton was again the fastest pilot. Raikkonen finished second, Senna third. In the third free practice session, Webber set the fastest time on a dry track ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton set the fastest time. The HRT, Marussia and Caterham pilots as well as Daniel Ricciardo were eliminated. In the second section, Hamilton stayed in the lead. The pilots in positions two to ten were within about thirteenth of a second. The Mercedes and Sauber drivers as well as Jean-Éric Vergne , Paul di Resta and Webber were eliminated. In the final section, Hamilton again achieved the fastest lap and thus secured pole position in front of Romain Grosjean and Vettel.

run

The start of the Hungarian Grand Prix had to be canceled and another introductory round carried out. The reason for the cancellation of the start was that Schumacher had taken the wrong starting position. Instead of going to 17th position, Schumacher went to 19th position. He then switched off his engine, thinking that there would be a five-minute break in this case. However, this regulation only applied until 2006. Schumacher was pushed into the pit lane and started the race from there.

At the start, Hamilton got off to a good start and kept the lead safely. Grosjean was attacked by Vettel and maintained his position. Vettel lost momentum. This enabled Button to drive past Vettel on the outside of the second corner into third position. There were also shifts behind that. Alonso went past Raikkonen to fifth place. In the initial phase, Schumacher pitted to change tires. However, he drove too fast and was immediately given a drive-through penalty. In the initial phase, the drivers tried to take care of their tires.

At the top, Hamilton and Grosjean separated. Grosjean was a few seconds behind Hamilton. Button came under pressure from Vettel in third place. On lap 15, Button was the first pilot from the leading group to pit. He switched from the softer to the harder tire compound. Vettel and Alonso follow three laps later. While Alonso also switched to the harder tires, Vettel stayed on the softer compound. Button stayed ahead of Vettel, Alonso fell behind Sergio Pérez , who had not stopped yet, and was therefore unable to take advantage of the fresh tires. Hamilton pitted ahead of Grosjean and took the lead again after the meanwhile leader Raikkonen had stopped. Hamilton switched to the harder compound, the Lotus drivers stayed on the softer tire compound. Raikkonen passed Alonso through the stop.

Grosjean, who had lost a few seconds to Hamilton due to a suboptimal pit stop, finally made up the gap and his gap on Hamilton fluctuated by a second. In the 34th round Button pitted again. He switched to the softer tire compound. Five laps later, Vettel passed Button, who had fallen behind Senna. Shortly afterwards, Grosjean and Hamilton also completed their second stop. Vettel, Grosjean and Button now drove on the harder tire compound. Grosjean initially fell behind Alonso. Alonso and Raikkonen stayed longer on the track from the leading group and also took the harder tire compound with them. While Alonso did not make up any places, Raikkonen, who drove a good second stint, took second place behind Hamilton after a close duel with Grosjean. Raikkonen braked himself, but since he was on the inside lane and Grosjean used the run-off zone to avoid, he stayed ahead of Grosjean.

In midfield there was a duel between Pastor Maldonado and di Resta. Maldonado drove into a right turn inside and pushed di Resta into the run-off zone with one touch. The race management then imposed a drive-through penalty on Maldonado for causing a collision.

Raikkonen caught up with Hamilton and was finally about a second behind Hamilton by the end of the race. However, he did not attempt to overtake because he never got close enough to his opponent. Vettel and Button went to the pits again. Button switched to the harder, Vettel to the softer tire compound. Button fell behind Alonso; Vettel came back onto the track right in front of Alonso and kept his position, but was on fresher tires. By the end of the race he made up the gap to Grosjean completely, but there was no more attempt to overtake.

Before the end of the race, Schumacher and Karthikeyan dropped out. Schumacher gave up with a technical defect in the pits, Karthikeyan parked his car with a broken steering. This defect was announced over a few laps when the car pulled slightly to the right.

Hamilton finally won the race in front of the Lotus drivers Raikkonen and Grosjean. Vettel was fourth ahead of Alonso and Button. The other points went to Senna, Webber, Felipe Massa and Nico Rosberg .

In the world championship, Alonso increased the gap to second-placed Webber. Vettel, Hamilton and Raikkonen in the places behind caught up. Red Bull stayed in the lead among the constructors. Ferrari dropped from second to fourth place. McLaren was new in second place ahead of Lotus.

There was a five-week summer break until the next race, the Belgian Grand Prix .
