With Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve (twice each) and Mika Häkkinen (once), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

training

In free practice on Friday, Coulthard set the fastest lap time ahead of Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher. In Saturday training, Michael Schumacher took over the leadership position ahead of Coulthard and his team-mate Rubens Barrichello .

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher again achieved the fastest lap and took pole position in front of the two McLaren drivers Coulthard and Häkkinen.

Warm up

Coulthard again achieved the fastest lap in the warm up. Michael Schumacher was second ahead of Barrichello.

run

Schumacher got off to a good start, but Häkkinen got off even better. He overtook Coulthard and sat side by side with Schumacher, cutting his line and taking the lead in the first corner, further back there were no shifts and the field came through without incident. Only Mika Salo lost two places; the new ranking after the first round was: Häkkinen, Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Barrichello, Heinz-Harald Frentzen , Giancarlo Fisichella , Jenson Button , Eddie Irvine and Alexander Wurz .

Häkkinen pulled away from Schumacher, but Coulthard couldn't get past him. The rest of the field continued to fall back, losing one second per lap to the leader. Ralf Schumacher drove slower than Barrichello, who had a faster car but couldn't get past him. Little happened until Fisichella spun off the track on lap eight and dropped a few places. Häkkinen was now 4.1 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, 5.8 seconds ahead of Coulthard and almost 10 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Barrichello. The race now calmed down without any further overtaking maneuvers. Häkkinen put one fastest lap after the other on his own, Michael Schumacher didn't follow him and couldn't do anything about it. In return, he moved slightly away from Coulthard, who was already 10 seconds ahead of the Ralf Schumacher / Barrichello duo. On lap 25, Häkkinen was 11 seconds ahead of Schumacher, 17 seconds ahead of Coulthard and 30 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher, who was still directly behind Barrichello; Frentzen followed 3 seconds behind the two.

Schumacher had the lighter car than Häkkinen and came within 10 seconds, but then made a pit stop on lap 27. His brother Ralf and Barrichello came in shortly afterwards, Barrichello was dispatched faster and came back on the track before Ralf Schumacher. Häkkinen increased his lead over Coulthard to 20 seconds and made his first stop on lap 31. Coulthard came in on the next lap, after the first stops Häkkinen was now ahead of Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Frentzen, Button, Irvine, Jarno Trulli and Pedro Diniz .

Häkkinen now lost a tenth of a second or less per lap to Schumacher, on whom he was 13 seconds ahead. Coulthard was the fastest and narrowed the gap to Schumacher to 4.7 seconds. Barrichello was 17 seconds behind Coulthard, but 2 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher, who slowly pulled away from Frentzen, who was another 9 seconds behind and was put under pressure by Button. Over the next 15 laps Coulthard reduced the gap to Schumacher more and more and was finally only 1.2 seconds behind him on the 44th lap. The subsequent lapping of Gastón Mazzacane then cost him a little time, so that Schumacher increased the gap to 1.9 seconds.

Coulthard narrowed the gap again up to lap 48, but once again lost time when lapping Marc Gené and was now 2.3 seconds behind Schumacher. Further down, Button fell behind with hydraulic problems in front of Frentzen. Häkkinen was 9 seconds ahead of Schumacher and 11 seconds ahead of Coulthard when the Ferrari pitted on lap 49. Häkkinen stayed out for another lap and Coulthard stopped on lap 51 and thereby won two seconds, but still came back on track three tenths of a second behind Schumacher. There were no further changes in position, only Trulli was now ahead of Irvine thanks to his 1-stop strategy. Schumacher and Coulthard continued to drive fast and began to close the 10-second gap to Häkkinen. Behind, Button had problems with his car and was overtaken by Trulli, and shortly afterwards by Irvine driving behind. Even if the gap narrowed even further, Häkkinen won ahead of Schumacher, who crossed the finish line right in front of Coulthard. Barrichello was fourth, Ralf Schumacher fifth and Frentzen sixth.

In the World Championship, Häkkinen took the lead for the first time this season. McLaren also took the top position in the constructors' championship, but led the table with just one point ahead of Ferrari.
