report

backgrounds

After the British Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 23 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 55 points and Red Bull Racing with 156 points .

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There have been several changes to the route compared to the previous year, mainly to improve safety. A new safety fence was erected at the end of the start-finish straight , and the number of tire stacks was increased in turn one , turn two , turn four , turn ten , turn eleven and turn twelve . In addition, an additional row of curbs was installed at the exit of Turn Four and Turn Eleven .

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the start-finish straight and began 130 meters after the last curve, the measuring point was five meters before the start of the finish curve. The second DRS zone was on the back straight after curve one ; there was no separate measuring point for this zone. So it could happen that after an overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the pilot in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.

It was the first time that Frédéric Vasseur was team manager at Sauber .

Daniil Kwjat (nine), Vettel (seven), Kevin Magnussen , Jolyon Palmer , Sergio Pérez , Carlos Sainz jr. , Stoffel Vandoorne (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (five times), Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen , Daniel Ricciardo and Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Lajos Herczeg (HUN), Tim Mayer (USA) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

free training

In the first free practice Ricciardo set the fastest time in 1: 18.486 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton. The training was interrupted by Antonio Giovinazzi after an accident . Shortly before the end of the training, Palmer damaged the front of the vehicle on a curb and had to park his vehicle on the edge of the track. The training was then canceled.

In the second free practice session, Ricciardo also set the fastest time in 1: 18.455 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. The training was interrupted again twice after accidents by Palmer and Wehrlein.

In the third free practice session, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 17.017 minutes, ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

After the third free practice session, Williams announced that substitute driver Paul di Resta would be contesting the rest of the race weekend as Massa suffered from a viral disease. Di Resta last contested a Formula 1 race at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix .

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Di Resta drove his very first laps in qualifying in the Williams FW40 . Vettel was fastest. The Sauber and Williams drivers as well as Kevin Magnussen were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Grosjean, the Force India pilots, Kwjat and Palmer were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a lap time of 1: 16.276 minutes, Vettel drove the fastest time ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. It was the 48th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Hülkenberg was moved five starting positions back due to a premature gear change. Kwjat was moved three places back for interfering with Lance Stroll and received one penalty point.

run

Vettel won the race from Raikkonen and Bottas. It was Vettel's 46th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship. Raikkonen achieved the fourth and Bottas the eighth podium finish of the season, the fifth in a row. The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso, Sainz, Pérez, Ocon and Vandoorne.

Both in the drivers 'and in the constructors' standings the first three places remained unchanged.
