After the Hungarian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 33 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 39 points and Red Bull Racing with 173 points .

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were several changes to the route, the main purpose of which was to increase safety. The guardrail on the right in front of the Malmedy was replaced by a concrete wall, and additional stacks of tires were set up in Eau Rouge and every curve from Malmedy to Stavelot . The curbs on the inside of turn 15 have been lengthened and an additional drainage opening has been added there.

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the Kemmel Straight and began 310 meters after the Raidillon . The measuring point was 240 meters before the entrance to the Eau Rouge curve . The measuring point for the second zone was 160 meters before the bus stop chicane , on the start-finish straight, 30 meters after the last bend, the DRS zone began.

At this race, Mercedes used a new version of the Mercedes-AMG F1 M08 EQ Power + for the first time . Also Haas sat in this race for the first time an advanced version of the Ferrari 062 a.

Hamilton contested his 200th Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship on the race weekend.

Daniil Kwjat (ten), Kevin Magnussen , Vettel (seven each), Jolyon Palmer , Sergio Pérez , Stoffel Vandoorne (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Carlos Sainz jr. , Max Verstappen (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Pascal Wehrlein (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Kimi Räikkönen (four times), Vettel, Hamilton (twice each), Massa and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Yves Bacquelaine (BEL), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Baham Lekhal (MRT) and Mika Salo (FIN).

free training

In the first free practice, Raikkonen set the fastest time in 1: 45.502 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. The training was interrupted by Massa after an accident.

Hamilton was fastest in the second free practice with a lap time of 1: 44.753 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. Since the monocoque had to be changed in Massa's vehicle after the accident in the first free practice session , he was not allowed to participate in the training session.

In the third free practice, Raikkonen set the fastest time in 1: 43.916 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Massa ignored double waved yellow flags and was therefore penalized with a five places back on the starting line-up and three penalty points.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Lance Stroll broke the rear wing due to vibrations from the rear tires deforming when accelerating and could only do one fast lap. The Mercedes and Ferrari drivers drove their time on the Supersoft mix, all the other drivers on Ultrasoft . Hamilton was fastest. The Sauber and Williams pilots and Kwjat were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Vandoorne, who received a starting place penalty, did not set a lap time, instead he tried to give his team-mate Fernando Alonso an advantage on the approach to Les Combes through a slipstream . Hamilton was again fastest. The McLaren drivers, Sainz and the Haas drivers were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Palmer parked his vehicle on the side of the track with a gearbox defect and therefore did not set any time. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 42.553 minutes, ahead of Vettel, who gained an advantage on his fast lap in front of Bus Stop through a slipstream of Raikkonen, and Bottas. It was the 68th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, so he drew level with the record holder Michael Schumacher .

Due to the use of the eighth unit of the turbocharger and MGU-H , the sixth unit of the energy storage unit and the control electronics, as well as the fifth unit of the combustion engine and MGU-K, Vandoorne was moved a total of 35 starting positions this season. Since his gearbox was also changed, the penalty increased by five places. Since an engine change was carried out again after the free practice session, he was moved a further 25 starting positions back because of the use of the ninth copy of the turbocharger and MGU-H, as well as the sixth copy of the combustion engine and MGU-K, so the penalty added up now on 65 starting places. Ericsson and Wehrlein were also moved five starting positions down due to a premature gearbox change. Massa received the same penalty for ignoring double-waving yellow flags in free practice. Kvjat was moved 20 positions back because of the use of the fifth copy of the internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H. Since Palmer's car also had to be changed after qualifying, he too was given a five-place penalty as a penalty.

run

At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. Hulkenberg got off to a bad start, so that Alonso and both Force India pilots passed him. In La Source , Hülkenberg then overtook Ocon again on the inside. Pérez had activated the wrong engine mode so that he was slower than the following drivers when approaching La Source . Hülkenberg overtook him on the left side of the lane, Pérez dodged to the right, where he touched the Ocon, who was also driving next to him. In addition to Hülkenberg and Ocon, Magnussen also passed Pérez. At the end of the first lap, Hülkenberg then overtook Alonso when approaching the bus stop .

At the end of the first lap, Hamilton was leading ahead of Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Ocon and Magnussen. On the second lap, Alonso overtook Hülkenberg, who passed Alonso again one lap later, while Pérez overtook Magnussen on the same lap. Wehrlein gave up the race at the end of the second lap due to a technical defect in the rear suspension.

Alonso's McLaren was significantly slower on the Kemmel Straight than the vehicles behind him, so Ocon, Pérez and Grosjean passed one after the other. On lap eight, Verstappen initially slowed down, had to let several drivers pass and then parked his vehicle at the edge of the track. The Marshals therefore showed yellow flags, Raikkonen drove past this point one lap later without slowing down. The race stewards investigated the incident and pronounced a ten-second time penalty against Raikkonen, and he received three penalty points.

In the tenth lap, Ocon, Grosjean and Alonso, the first drivers in the top ten, drove to change tires, one lap later Hülkenberg and Massa changed tires. On the twelfth lap, Hamilton changed tires and dropped to fourth place. Pérez also changed the tires, in contrast to the other pilots from the front field, the Force India pilots drove with Supersoft instead of Soft . Another lap later, Bottas changed tires, then Vettel and Ricciardo, who were in charge at the time, pitted to change tires.

Hamilton overtook Raikkonen, who was now in the lead and also pitted at the end of the lap. Pérez received a five-second time penalty and a penalty point for leaving the track after overtaking Grosjean and thus gaining an advantage.

In the 17th lap, Raikkonen took his ten-second time penalty and dropped back to seventh place. In the following laps, Raikkonen overtook Ocon and Hülkenberg.

Pérez drove to the pits for the second tire change on lap 25 and served his sentence there, then drove again Supersoft . Alonso gave up the race in the pits. Two laps later, Ocon stopped and also switched to Supersoft , Pérez set the fastest lap of the race to date. Ocon came back on the track in twelfth place just behind Pérez and subsequently reduced the gap. On lap 29 he attacked Pérez in front of the Eau Rouge , who however defended himself. The vehicles touched, Ocon lost part of his front wing, Pérez suffered a tire damage on the right rear.

In order to recover the debris lying on the track, the race management sent the safety car out onto the track. All drivers used the safety car phase to change tires again, while Ocon had his front wing changed. Hamilton and Bottas switched to Soft , Ricciardo to Supersoft and the other pilots to Ultrasoft . Hamilton led before Vettel, Bottas, Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Hülkenberg, Grosjean, Massa, Magnussen and Ocon.

The race was reopened on lap 34. Magnussen braked at the restart and fell back to the end of the field. Vettel attacked Hamilton, who defended himself and stayed in the lead. Behind them Ricciardo and Raikkonen overtook Bottas, who did not get his soft tires to the required temperature.

Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race shortly before the end of the race, but was no longer within striking distance of Hamilton, and there were no changes in position behind either. Pérez gave up the race in the pits with two laps to go.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo. It was Hamilton's 58th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fifth of which this season. Vettel achieved the ninth and Ricciardo the sixth podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Raikkonen, Bottas, Hülkenberg, Grosjean, Massa, Ocon and Sainz.

In the overall standings, Hamilton shortened the gap to Vettel, Bottas remained third. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes increased its lead over Ferrari and Red Bull.
