The Belgian Grand Prix 2019 (official Formula 1 Johnnie Walker Belgian Grand Prix in 2019 ) took place on 1 September at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Spa place and was the thirteenth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2019 .

After the Hungarian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 62 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 69 points ahead of Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 150 points ahead of Ferrari and with 194 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C1 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C2 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C3 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.

During the summer break there was a driver swap between Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso : Alexander Albon replaced Pierre Gasly at Red Bull Racing from this Grand Prix , while Gasly took Albon's place at Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Verstappen (seven), Sebastian Vettel (six), Romain Grosjean , Daniel Ricciardo , Lance Stroll (five each), Antonio Giovinazzi , Sergio Pérez (four each), Kevin Magnussen (three), Hamilton, Daniil Kwjat , Carlos Sainz jr. (two each), Gasly and George Russell (one each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Kimi Räikkönen (four times), Hamilton, Vettel (three times each) and Ricciardo (once), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

free training

In the first free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 44.574 minutes ahead of Charles Leclerc and Verstappen.

In the second free practice, Leclerc was fastest with a lap time of 1: 44.123 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. The training session was stopped shortly before the end after Pérez stopped at the edge of the track with a technical defect.

In the third free practice session, Leclerc was again fastest, this time with a lap time of 1: 44.206 minutes. Vettel was again second ahead of Bottas. The training was briefly interrupted by Hamilton after an accident.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Leclerc was the fastest. Robert Kubica did not set a lap time due to a technical problem and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Next to him, Russell, the two Scuderia Toro Rosso drivers and Sainz retired. The section was canceled around a minute before the end after Giovinazzi parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with a technical defect.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Leclerc was again fastest. Giovinazzi did not take part in this section after the technical defect in his vehicle. Alongside him, Albon, Stroll, Lando Norris and Grosjean were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Leclerc set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 42.519 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. It was the third pole position for Leclerc in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Because of the use of the fifth internal combustion engine, Sainz was moved five places down this season. Albon was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth combustion engine, the fourth turbocharger, the fourth MGU-H , the third MGU-K , the third energy storage device and the third control electronics. Kwjat has been moved back to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger, fifth MGU-H and fourth MGU-K. Due to an early change of gearbox, he was given another five starting positions. Nico Hülkenberg was moved five positions back this season because of the use of the sixth combustion engine. Stroll was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth combustion engine, the fourth turbocharger and the fourth MGU-H and the fourth MGU-K. Ricciardo has been moved five positions back this season because of the use of the fifth internal combustion engine.

After qualifying the accident in the main race FIA Formula 2 Championship the Renault -Nachwuchspilot Anthoine Hubert in an accident fatal. Several teams and drivers then canceled media appointments and other events or canceled upcoming appointments for the evening.

Leclerc won the race ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. It was the first victory for Leclerc and also the first victory of a Monegasque driver in the Formula 1 world championship. For Ferrari it was the first victory since the US Grand Prix in 2018 . The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Albon, Pérez, Kwjat, Hülkenberg, Gasly and Stroll. Since Vettel achieved the fastest race lap, he received an additional point.

The top three positions in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
