Hubert came into contact with motorsport through his father Francois, who competed in amateur rallies and started his career in karting in 2004 , where he remained active until 2012. He won the French Junior Kart Championship in 2005 and was runner-up in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 he was third in the U18 FIA CIK Kart World Championship.

2013 he moved to the Formula racing and denied the French Formula 4 Championship . Here he won the championship straight away with eleven wins in 21 races ahead of Jules Gounon .

In 2014 Hubert switched to Tech 1 Racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With a sixth place as the best result, he was 15th in the drivers' championship. He also made several guest starts in the Alpine Formula Renault for Tech 1 Racing . In 2015 Hubert stayed with Tech 1 Racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. With two wins, he improved to fifth place overall and became the best driver in his team. He also completed three racing weekends in Alpine Formula Renault together with Tech 1 Racing. In six starts, he crossed the finish line four times first and twice as second. As a guest starter, however, he was not entitled to points here.

In 2016 Hubert switched to Van Amersfoort Racing in the European Formula 3 championship . He won his first Formula 3 race at the Norisring and ended the season with two more podium finishes in eighth place in the drivers' championship.

In 2017 Hubert received a cockpit at the ART Grand Prix in the GP3 series . With four podium finishes, he finished fourth in the overall standings behind his three teammates, who all won at least one race. In 2018 Hubert stayed at ART Grand Prix in the GP3 series. Immediately before the start of the season in May 2018, he was accepted into the support program of the Formula 1 racing team Renault , Renault also appeared as a sponsor on Hubert's vehicle with its company logos. With two wins and nine other podium finishes, he won the championship title at the end of the season ahead of his teammate Nikita Masepin .

In 2019 Hubert drove for the BWT Arden team in the FIA Formula 2 Championship . In Monaco he finished eighth in the main race on Friday, which secured him pole position for the sprint race on Saturday. Here Hubert celebrated his first victory in the racing series. At the following race weekend on the Circuit Paul Ricard , he again finished eighth in the main race and then won the sprint race on Sunday from pole position. In addition, Renault gave him the first opportunity to test in a Formula 1 car at the Red Bull Ring in June 2019 . After the eighth race weekend he was the second best newcomer in eighth place overall.

Accident in Spa

On August 31, 2019, he was involved in a serious accident during the main race of the Belgian Grand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . On the second lap of the race, Giuliano Alesi lost control of his car in the Raidillon de l'Eau Rouge , presumably due to a puncture, and spun. After a collision with the road barrier, he immediately drove back onto the track. Ralph Boschung , who was driving behind, had to swerve and brake abruptly, whereupon Hubert, who was only driving shortly behind, turned to the right into the run-off zone and crashed hard against the surrounding tire wall. His car was thrown back and stopped across the direction of travel at the edge of the track, where he was hit head-on by Juan Manuel Correa . At this point Correa was driving at a speed of around 270 km / h, both vehicles were torn apart in the collision. The race was stopped immediately. Both seriously injured drivers were taken to the medical center on the track, where Hubert died about two hours later from his injuries. The sprint race of the FIA Formula 2 Championship planned for the next day has been canceled.

On the morning of September 1st, a minute's silence was held at the racetrack for all racing series competing on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (in addition to Formula 1 and Formula 2, these were Formula 3 and the Porsche Supercup ) in memory of Hubert. Immediately before the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, there was another minute of silence for the deceased. The Formula 1 drivers wore mourning bandages , many teams put stickers on their vehicles with the words “Racing for Anthoine”. In an action coordinated via social media , the spectators remembered Hubert in lap 19, this was Hubert's starting number, with standing ovations . Race winner Charles Leclerc dedicated the victory to Hubert, his first in the Formula 1 World Championship. Both competed against each other in karting as a child. The traditional champagne shower after the award ceremony was waived in all races this weekend. At the Formula 1 race in Singapore on September 22, 2019, when Hubert would have turned 23, he was also remembered.

In honor of Hubert, the Anthoine Hubert Award was introduced in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in December 2019 . This award goes to the rookie with the best points in a past championship season. The first recipient of this award is Zhou Guanyu , who worked together with Hubert in the Renault youth development program.
