Zhou Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu ( Chinese 周冠宇 , Pinyin Zhōu Guānyǔ ; born May 30, 1999 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese automobile racing driver . He has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship since 2019 . Due to his strong performance in his debut season, which he finished in a remarkable seventh place, Zhou was the first Formula 2 driver ever to receive the Anthoine Hubert Award for Rookie of the Year. This award was introduced in honor of Anthoine Hubert , who died in an accident in 2019 and who, like Zhou, made his debut in the same year.
Career
Zhou started his motorsport career in karting in 2007 , where he remained active until 2014. In 2012, Zhou moved to London and continued his career there. In 2013, he won the European and British Rotax Max Junior championships . In 2014 Zhou was accepted into the Ferrari Driver Academy , Scuderia Ferrari's support program. Since 2019 he has been part of the Renault Sport Academy, the support program of the Renault F1 Team.
At the end of 2014 Zhou made his debut in formula racing and took part in the Winter Trophy of the Italian Formula 4 championship for the Prema Powerteam . He was third in both races. In 2015, Zhou received a regular cockpit for the Prema Powerteam in the Italian Formula 4 championship. At the second event in Monza , he managed to win all three races. It was his only victories. He achieved six other podium finishes. With 223 to 331 points, he finished the season in second place behind his teammate Ralf Aron . In addition, in 2015 Zhou competed for the Prema Powerteam in nine of 24 races in the German Formula 4 championship . He started at the first race weekend for Italy . With a second place as the best result, he was 15th overall at the end of the season.
At the beginning of 2016 , Zhou started for M2 Competition in the Toyota Racing Series . With one win he finished sixth in the championship. He then moved to Motopark in the European Formula 3 Championship in 2016 . He already achieved a podium placement with a third place at the first event. Another third place followed in the further course of the season and he was 13th in the drivers' championship. In 2017 Zhou competed in the European Formula 3 championship again and switched to the Prema Powerteam . While Prema was able to win the team classification, Zhou was 8th in the overall ranking.
In 2018 he competed again with Prema in the European Formula 3 championship. He was able to win the first race and finished the season 8th in the overall standings. His team mate Mick Schumacher won the championship.
Before the 2019 season, it was announced that Zhou would be driving for Renault as a junior driver. He also took on the position of a simulator and test pilot. Zhou finished his first Formula 2 championship in 2019 as the best rookie. He started from pole position at Silverstone and thus holds the Formula 2 track record. In the overall ranking, Zhou came 7th.
In 2020 he will start again for the UNI-Virtuosi team. His teammate is Callum Ilott . He also takes on the role of a test driver for the Renault F1 team.
