Career
Career
Sophia Flörsch began her motorsport career in karting in 2005 , where she remained active until 2014. In 2015 she planned to switch to professional formula racing in the German Formula 4 championship . However, this failed because the minimum age had been raised to 15 years before the season. Instead, it went to the Ginetta Junior Championship , a British junior sports car championship. With HHC Motorsport , she won both races at the Thruxton Circuit . After more than four years, a female racing driver won this championship again. In the middle of the season, she withdrew from the championship in order to prepare for a change to a Formula 4 championship . At the time of her exit she was on the third championship course; at the end of the season she was eleventh overall.
In 2016 Flörsch switched to Team Motopark in the German Formula 4 championship . She also signed an advertising contract with the US sporting goods manufacturer Under Armor . She already finished her first race in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in ninth place in the points. This made her the first woman to score points in the German Formula 4 championship. On her debut weekend, she also started the third race as the first woman in this championship from the front row and was the first female driver to achieve a leading lap. She went into the final lap as third; in this, Job van Uitert hit her, causing her to lose the rear wing, continue without it and finish in fifth place. She finished the season with 19th place overall.
On March 1, 2017 it was announced that Flörsch will be competing in Formula 4 for the Mücke Motorsport team in the 2017 season . Auto Bild Motorsport was won as a new sponsor. At the 17th race of the 2017 season at the Sachsenring, she finished third, making her the first woman to achieve a podium finish in Formula 4. Shortly afterwards she was banned from the first race of the season finale at the Hockenheimring. After the race in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, she published video recordings from her own onboard camera, which showed an incident in which she was only barely able to avoid a vehicle crossing the racetrack. Since she did not own the rights to these recordings, she was fined 5,000 euros. The racing ban was also issued because, in the opinion of the DMSB sports court , it had not slowed down sufficiently before when the flags were red and thus contributed to this incident. In the second race in Hockenheim she reached third place and thus finished on the podium again. She finished the last race of the season with the fastest lap of the race in seventh place. In 2017 she was also active in the Italian Formula 4 championship .
After Flörsch had to concentrate primarily on her Abitur exams in the first half of 2018 in addition to a few test drives, it was announced on July 6, 2018 that she would be for the Van Amersfoort Racing team in the European Formula 3 championship and in Formula 3 races will take place as part of the Macau Grand Prix .
Accident in Macau in 2018
At the Macau Grand Prix 2018, Flörsch had a serious accident on November 18, 2018. At a speed of around 276 km / h, she collided with Jehan Daruvala's vehicle , who was irritated by a yellow flashing light and had braked. The left front and left rear suspension broke on her car, she lost control of her vehicle, turned and slid backwards along the border of the track. Before the bend at the Lisboa Hotel, her vehicle was levered out by the curbs attached there , got on and brushed Shou Tsuboi's vehicle on the roll bar, broke through a boundary fence and hit the top of the vehicle - the rear of the vehicle below - against a mobile platform on which there was several photographers found.
Flörsch was available after the accident, but was taken to the nearby Conde S. Januário Hospital in Macau. According to the chief doctor there, she suffered a spinal fracture, but, according to her father, had no symptoms of paralysis and was operated on the following day. During the operation, several vertebral fractures and compression of the spinal canal had to be repaired.
Other people were injured in the accident, including Tsuboi, a marshal and two photographers. After the accident, the race that Daniel Ticktum won was interrupted for an hour.
2019
For 2019, a continuation of Flörsch's commitment to Van Amersfoort Racing and participation in the Formula European Masters was planned. After this series was canceled shortly before the start of the season, it was announced that the team would take part in the Formula Regional European Championship .
She started again with the HWA team in Macau, but retired after seven of 15 rounds.
2020
On February 17th, Sophia Flörsch received the Laureus World Sports Award as Comeback of the Year.
For the 2020 and 2021 seasons she was signed by the Richard Mille Racing Team to participate in the European Le Mans Series . She shares the vehicle with Katherine Legge and Tatiana Calderón . The team has also applied to take part in the Le Mans 24-hour race .
Flörsch will also drive for the Campos Racing team in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship .
