Katherine Anne Legge [ ˈlɛɡ ] (born July 12, 1980 in Guildford , Surrey , England ) is a British racing driver . She competed in the Champ Car World Series in 2006 and 2007 . From 2008 to 2010 she was active in the DTM . In 2012 and 2013 she competed in the IndyCar Series .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1990-2005)

Legge began her motorsport career in 1990 in kart racing , in which she was active until 1998. In 1999 she competed in the British MGF Cup . In 2000 she switched to formula racing and took part in a British Formula Ford race. Over the next two years she competed in a number of British Formula Renault races . In 2002 she was the first woman to be recognized as a rising star by the British Racing Drivers Club.

2003 Legge took part in four races of the British Formula 3 championship . She remained without points. In addition to four races in the British Formula Renault, Legge competed in the US Formula Renault in 2004 and reached tenth place there.

In 2005 Legge started in the Atlantic Championship for the Polestar Racing Group . At the opening race in Long Beach , she immediately won. So she became the first woman in a major North American single-seater a race decided race series of its own. Further victories in Edmonton and San José followed in the further course of the season . With a total of five podium finishes, she finished the season third in the championship. She was level on points with her team-mate Antoine Bessette , who, as he had one less win, was behind Legge on the pitch. This year it was named “Most Promising Road Racer of The Year” by RACER magazine.

In November 2005, Legge took part in Formula 1 test drives in Vallelunga for Minardi . She became the first woman after Sarah Fisher in 2002 to drive a Formula 1 car. After she had an accident after two laps on her first day of testing, she was only a little behind Juan Cáceres , who had set the fastest time, on day two . In December, she tested an A1GP vehicle and became the first woman to drive an A1GP car. There were no races in the A1GP.

Champ Car (2006-2007)

After her test drives in Formula 1 and A1GP, Legge tested in the Champ Car World Series for Rocketsports Racing and PKV Racing . Then she was signed for the 2006 season by PKV Racing. Oriol Servià became her teammate . Legge became the first woman to lead a champ car race that season. During the race in Elkhart Lake , part of the rear wing of her vehicle came off. The vehicle lost traction in a fast right-hand bend and crashed sideways into the boundary wall at high speed, then rolled over several times and was completely destroyed. The race was then interrupted. Legge survived the impact in the wall almost unharmed and only suffered minor injuries. At the end of the season, Legge was 16th overall with a sixth place as the best result, while her team-mate was eleventh with a podium finish.

In 2007 Legge moved to Dale Coyne Racing within the Champ Car series , where Bruno Junqueira was her teammate. After finishing sixth at the season opener and tenth place one race later, she failed to finish in the top 10 later in the season. With 108 points, she finished the season in 15th place in the drivers' standings. Junqueira was seventh overall with 233 points and three podium finishes. Legge also took part in a Rolex Sports Car Series race.

DTM (2008-2010)

In 2008 Legge switched to the DTM for the Audi customer team Futurecom TME . She received a two year old Audi A4 DTM . Her team-mate was former DTM runner-up Christijan Albers . The two remained without points. While a tenth place was Albers 'best result, two 15th places were Legges' best placements.

In 2009 Legge moved to Abt Sportsline within the Audi team and received a one year old model, a so-called “ annual car ” of the Audi A4 DTM. In the third race of the season at the Norisring , Legge set the fastest race lap for the first time . After a fifth place on the grid, however, she didn't make it into the points because of a bad start. In contrast to the other Audi drivers in a “year-old car”, she got no points.

In 2010 Legge received an Audi cockpit from Team Rosberg in a year-old car. While all the other Audi drivers scored, Legge was again without points. Several 14th places were her best positions. Your team mate Markus Winkelhock achieved fourth place as the best result. After the 2010 season, Legge's DTM engagement ended.

IndyCar Series (2012)

After Legge was without a cockpit in 2011, she returned to motorsport in 2012 . For Dragon Racing she drove in the IndyCar Series . Her team-mate was the four-time champ car champion Sébastien Bourdais . After the fourth race, Dragon changed the engine supplier from Lotus to Chevrolet . However, since these did not have enough engines, Dragon reduced his team to one vehicle for the sixth race. Bourdais was selected as the pilot for the road courses, and Legge was given the cockpit for the remaining four oval races. In addition, it was used in another street course race because an additional engine was available. At the season finale, the MAVTV 500 , she achieved her first top 10 placement in the IndyCar Series with ninth place. Legge finished the season in 26th place overall.

Endurance and Formula E (since 2013)

Although Legge had a contract with Dragon Racing and sponsor TrueCar for the 2013 IndyCar Series season , she was replaced by Sebastián Saavedra in the run-up to the season . Saavedra received both her cockpit and her sponsor. Legge then announced that they would take legal action against their dismissal. Legge eventually got a cockpit in the DeltaWing in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). There she reached a podium and was seventh in the LMP1 classification. In addition, she contested a long-distance race in the Rolex Sports Car Series. For this year's Indianapolis 500 she received a cockpit from Schmidt Peterson Motorsports .

In 2014 Legge was given a part-time cockpit in DeltaWing in the newly founded United SportsCar Championship (USCC), which had emerged from a merger of the ALMS and the Rolex Sports Car Series. She was 19th in the Prototype ranking. She also drove a race in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge . In addition, Legge competed for Amlin Aguri in the newly founded FIA Formula E Championship in 2014/15 . Due to an overlap with her USCC engagement, she did not start twice. She then ended her Formula E involvement. A 15th place was her best result. Also in 2015-19 Legge competed in the USCC, which has since been renamed the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship . In 2019 she was part of the only team in this series with Christina Nielsen and Simona de Silvestro with an all-female driver pairing.

Personal

Legge was in a relationship with Peter Terting for several years .
